Are the 1.6 TDCi turbo issues resolved in newer models?

Featured Replies

Hello all. Sorry if this has been done, but I've been searching for a while and haven't found a clear answer. I know there were some design problems with the 1.6 TDCi which resulted in a lot of turbo failures, from early/mid-2000's onwards. I'm thinking of buying a newer Fiesta Zetec S with this engine, looking at a 2009 and a 2012 at the moment, but not sure if we know whether the problem has been fixed at the point of production yet?

I know the problems can be caused/worsened by not servicing properly, and I won't be touching anything without excellent history, but there appears to definitely have been some fundamental problems. If we don't know for sure that they've been ironed out, I think I'll have to steer clear of the newer ones, even well-serviced ones. I'm kind of hoping someone can confirm that it's been sorted, or show me that the percentage of failures isn't as high as I'm thinking, as these sound great otherwise!

Thanks in advance!

2009 will be the 90PS 16v DOHC, 2012 will be the 95PS 8v SOHC.

So the 2012 will be the newer engine, but also comes with a DPF, which the 2009 doesn't.

If you are doing the miles, the 2012 should be a more reliable engine, however it is still the same fundamental design, so important to have had regular oil changes and been serviced as per schedule.

Thanks for that. In that case I'm a bit hesitant to go for it, even with FSH, given that there seems to be quite a lot of noise about even well-serviced ones going bang.. and my reason for looking is too many repairs popping up on the current car! :ohmy:

I think they changed something, possibly an oil feed pipe at some point which improved reliability.

@iantt probably knows. :)

It is still ultimately a DV6 though, so needs to have been looked after....
