Petrol or electric?

Engine size?

Last time the glow plugs/spark plugs were changed?

Last time fuel filter was changed?

It's a bit hard to suggest solutions without at least the 1st 2 items mate.

Maybe air is getting into the fuel system. Usually (certainly on the Focus), there is no tank pump, the main pump has to suck fuel through, and it is very bad if any air gets into it. Cracks or leaks in the pipes up to the main pump, or in the filter housing, the filter vent valve or the sealing ring on the filter are all suspects. A clogged filter would make this problem worse.

These engines should start ok without glowplugs, at least down to freezing. They just run a bit rough for a while.
