MK3 2002 Mondeo won't unlock

Featured Replies

I have only had one remote key for my car which has never worked. Locking and unlocking the car has always been from the driver's door.

I can lock the car from the driver's door, but can no longer unlock the door. If I can lock the car, then my thoughts are that the key is not worn?

The car can be locked and unlocked from the inside but that sets the alarm off. I have to disconnect the battery to stop the alarm going off.

If I leave the doors unlocked and open the drivers door the alarm goes off.

I can start the car, but the alarm / hazards are activated.

It was getting dark, so I've only removed the driver's side door card, but can't see any broken part that is preventing unlocking the car.

My car can be left unlocked where I live, if I could stop the alarm and hazards activating when I start the engine.

Any recommendations on the best way to proceed?

I would buy a cheap remote fob (suitable for your car) off Ebay, and try the programming procedure which is in the owners manual. It is usually turning the ignition on & off a few times in a certain time, then pressing a button on the remote.

That way you will find out if the car receiver works, and can use the fob to lock / unlock.

It seems odd that opening a door on an unlocked car sets off the alarm, maybe it is because it was unlocked manually, not with the remote.

A full key can be expensive, with cutting & the PATS (immobiliser) system, though for your car, PATS can be done in the car like the remote control, if you have two keys that will start the car.

Many thanks for your reply. It seems that I have 2 problems:

1. I inspected the door lock mechanism today and it looks as though something has broken within the central door locking mechanism (within the white casing). Though this can be prised off, it's just not worth the hassle. Hopefully a replacement central door locking mechanism from eBay would resolve the problem of unlocking the car from the outside.

2. Upon starting the car with the unlocked doors shut, the alarm stops after 30 seconds, but the hazard warning lights remain on. I guess I could leave the car running for 5 minutes by which time the hazard warning lights will have gone off and I should be able to drive the car normally? I need to find a way of switching the alarm off permanently or a routine to switch the hazards off without waiting 5 minutes.

Due to the age of the car and with an MOT due in March, which will involve more money having to be spent, I only want to get the car running for a couple of months.

It is very odd. According to the manual, unlocking the car with the key, or with the remote should immediately de-activate the alarm. Even with the enhanced security system, turning the ignition on will de-activate it.

I suspect the broken lock is the cause of the alarm staying on.

(assuming it is the original Ford alarm system in the car, not some dodgy aftermarket job!)

The car is fitted with the original Ford alarm system.

Put the door card back today and reconnected the car battery. Started the car in the drive twice and the hazards activated by the alarm stayed on for 5 minutes each time. Went for a drive, parked up, switched the ignition off and the hazards stayed on for 5 minutes. When they stopped I drove off. I parked up again, yes, you guessed it, the hazards stayed on for 5 minutes.

So for the next drive, I tried something different. Now, before I started the car, I locked all the doors, then I started the car. No hazards flashing :-) . I parked up, no hazards flashing :-) . Later in the day, I did the same, locked the doors before starting the car and when switching the ignition off, the hazards do not flash :-) .
