New alternator.... but which one??

Featured Replies

Hi,

i have a 2003 1.4 tdci fusion in which needs a new alternator.

Howevet I don't know which to get, Haynes book says that it's either 70,80,90 amps but not which one for what car.

Can I use any?

Also it says there are about 3/4 different makes.... any better than others.

Forgot  to say I need to buy it second hand / used so eBay will be prob the place for me.... any help appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

Best bet is to look at the one that's already fitted - it will have some details on it.

Ok I've got one.

Which brand have you gone with before you even start the job? Lol

I've got a used RTX oneeith 6 months warenty from a scrap yard. Sold as working. Looks ok too.

RTX are quite possibly the worst brand in the world in terms of reliability. I seriously hope they honour that 6 month warranty on it.

Why are they that bad????

Im now scared!

Cheap manufacture probably. I've heard of countless RTX problems and failures. I'm reluctant to fit RTX parts for anyone, Eurocarparts seem to be the supplier of them, and they sell some terrible brands!!

You have the part now you can only try it.

Upon taking the sux belt off I'm not sure my alternator is at fault.

The fault I'm talking of is a sort of metallic noise like a bearing going bad... we'll sort of... it pings and clicks etc.

Garage said it was alternator but I think it might be the air con compressor....

anyway after taking the aux belt off I played with the pullys and found some play in the compressor wheel only. All the other wheels etc were ok,however I was unable to replicate the noise whilst spinning.

He hence I've not replaced anything yet.
