Warning - Don't make the same stupid mistake as me!!

Featured Replies

Mistake 1

I bought some fancy metal dust covers for my tyre valves. Look nice but....

The metal on the valve and the dust cap are different and they reacted so that they fused together.

Mistake 2

I got a pair of pliers to them. Instead of releasing the dust cap, the valve head snapped and all the air rushed out of the tyre.

This is going to be expensive. they are TPMS units!!

easy done

Yup done that been there. I ended up getting g standard valves and junking the tpms. Cheap metal dust covers are krap.

When I put fancy valve caps on my car they soon disappeared as the local village idiot pinched them and then put them on his bike and then thought I wouldn't notice as he rode past with a smile on his face  (true story)

I had my stock ones pinched a week after getting my car.
Quickly replaced with locking caps and still in place 2 years later.

Put vaseline on them, they don't corrode then.

I have purple dice on my mondeo, but they are plastic, maybe look at getting some plastic ones?

I got ST 18" Wheels on mine and the caps are metal I put a smidge of copper grease on the valve threads before putting the caps on and so far so good.

The grease ideas sound good, but with my luck the grease would disappear and I would end up in the same situation. Not willing to take the chance. TPMS was £80 per wheel. Luckily I managed to get the two front ones off, but had to replace the two rear ones. Not willing to take the chance. I will put up with naff plastic ones.
