Daytime Lights

Featured Replies

My car has the feature of the side lights coming on as soon as you unlock the doors & they stay on.  Although it's a handy feature, I'm getting fed up with other motorists tooting me & telling me they're on.  Is there a way of disabling them.  I have looked through the handbook, but couldn't find anything, although I could well have not seen it.

Chris.

If they are factory fitted daytime running lights then they will be a legal requirement and must not be disabled.

Are you sure they're tooting at your daytime lights? Why? Half the cars on the road have them so surely they're not tooting at them all are they? I've certainly never experienced it.

Could there be another issue you have?

Are you driving round on a night/dusk with just your DRLs on? As that's worthy of a toot and a gesture or two

Thanks for that Clive.  After a bit of googling, I discovered that they are a requirement.

Hi Matthew

No, it's the daytime running lights. They do seem a bit bright bright, but it's probably people tooting me who don't realise the new laws....I actually am getting used to them & quite like them......I stand out from the crowd.......lol

Hi Kieran

No, it's definitely just the running lights.......They're growing on me now.

Lol people have nothing better to do than flash people with DRL's hahaha. Just when you think you've heard it all. I always forget to turn my headlights on, so I just drive everywhere with them on now, not been flashed once (then again though I'm usually still half asleep whenever I drive so probably wouldn't notice anyway)

I'm hoping you are joking about forgetting about headlights and being half asleep, if not then let me know where you normally drive so I can avoid you lol.

i think someone mentioned in the Focus forum that using FOCCUS software with a OBD codereader you could turn them off.

Volvo had them on their cars in the 1970s but they did not catch on . In the 90s I had a 1977 Volvo 244 with them on.

I don't think they're configurable on the Fiesta. You could always disconnect the specific cable from each headlamp but I'd leave them be, at least after working out why they're flashing you and no one else that has them fitted!

You can do, they are only a legal requirement if the vehicle they are on has been type approved after Feb 2011 (I think it was Feb) , not just a facelift. If disabling them on a vehicle after it has me that criteria then it would be illegal. To be honest I see no reason to disable them, they are a safety feature now and if you were involved in an accident during the time DRLs would be lit and you had disabled them then insurance may be a bit of a hassle

Easily disabled by pulling a fuse out though.

I have that trouble, because the dash illuminates it gives you the feeling that you have the lights on.

on my fiesta the daytime running lights are also the side lights (although dimmer when the light switch is in side light position) so disconnecting would mean no side lights and fail MOT.

"I have that trouble, because the dash illuminates it gives you the feeling that you have the lights on.".  I agree with this , I see lots of cars at night without the main lights on. When you could not see the speedo it reminded you to put your lights on if you had forgot.  No longer the case, bit of a backward step in safety that is.

presumably it wouldn't be to hard to have a sensor that could detect the light (mobile phones do it!) and then alert you that you should have your lights on.

My car does have that, in fact I think all the cars I have ever driven have had it. They have all been different makes and ages too.

...or just have automatic lights as standard (which you might as well if putting in a light sensor).

Good point Isetta about the DRLs also serving the function of sidelights - I hadn't spotted that.

I mean my dash still auto dims when it goes dark, just the headlights don't come on. Seems a little daft.

Their fitment is obligatory, but their  operation is not.  On some makes, EG Peugeot, they can be disabled from the vehicle settings menu on the dash screen.  I think you'd probably need Forscan to disable them in a Fezza.

It's very unlikely that someone would flash you because of your running lights unless you are driving at night with JUST them on. In this case they can be dazzling.

But they can be easily disabled using Forscan.

Some time ago Mrs Tull was out in my car, a Kia at the time.  People kept flashing her and she couldn't figure out why.  Eventually she realised the car was on fire.

fire extinguishers in cars are compulsory in some countries, perhaps that's next on the list of new compulsory stuff after the daytime lights

Full spare kit of bulbs, a fluorescent for each occupant, breath test kit... thank heavens we will be out of the EU before the cancer spreads to the UK.

I had a couple of Volvos in the 80/90s and I  used to get flashed all the time.
