just tried to remove the cap of the expansion bottle and only the top part has come undone. i have tried removing the part left with needle nose pliers but no good. it seems well and truly cemented in place.

You need a new cap, and a new container  if you can't get the remains of the cap off without damage. It's a common problem. Ensure you coat the replacement thread with silicone lubricant before use. And open (when cold) and close monthly to ensure it doesn't get stuck again. Ford will replace it if under warranty.

Buy a new expansion tank and fit that

Isn't there a potential to light the coolant doing this?

I thought it was glycol based.   If so: https://www.firefighterclosecalls.com/anti-freeze-does-burn-2/

Why were you opening it? - can't remember the last time I had to top up coolant - especially in a year old car

Think I'd try running the engine for a bit, the pressure might push it out.

meant to say its diluted with water did mine that way didn't go near the coolant just cut the top from side to side two cuts in all

and pick the rest out with needle noes pillars

Indeed it is. Not sure how hot the red hot knife would be, but iirc the flash point of coolant at normal/atmospheric pressure isn't far over 100c.
