Reverse lights switch not being pressed on gear change

Hey everyone,

Our reverse lights are not working, so we took our van into a mechanics to have a look at it. They told us that the bulbs and switch are fine, but we seem to be missing something in the gearbox to actually press the switch when the van is put into reverse. If they put their finger in they can press the switch and the reverse lights come on, but they do not get pressed when the van is put into reverse.

Does anyone have any idea what could be missing? They said that they could not find the part on the website. 

We have a 2006 swb transit van.
