Focus MK3 Display Upgrade (Sat Nav)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Does anyone know what I would need to do to upgrade my current ford system from the non Sat Nav version to the sat nav version... I think its Sync 1 as its a 62 plate.

If its a case of just switching over the screen I'm sure ebay could help?

Thanks

I have to add to this - I'm now not sure I've even got Sync 1.

Whats the easiest way to tell? I checked ETIS but it's got no information on my car at all other than its model... :(

Take a picture of your head unit and we will will be able to tell.

Does it have a small colour screen? If so, you have sync 1.1. If not, it’s sync 1.

Go into the radio settings and you will see a number very similar to either AM5T or D1BT (this might also be E1BT). If you see any of these then you will have either Sync 1.0 or 1.1.

That’s sync 1.1. I had that it my focus st mk3.. just upgraded it to a sync 2 unit from a Mondeo! :)

Well this is annoying, I can't attach an image from an android phone.

Here's a link to an identical setup:

https://www.hi-auto.co.uk/cars/ford/focus/1.6tdcititanium5doorestate/156828/0

That car in the link is not even sync 1 or 1.1. are your radio controls on the steering wheel the same as the car in the link. If it is then it's non sync Bluetooth and voice control.

That’s 100% the Sony version of sync 1.1. Mine was exactly the same as this and had Bluetooth and voice control... check the specs sheet for the Sony upgrade package, it come with voice control and Bluetooth as standard... I’ve literally just ripped this from my car for a sync 2 upgrade.

Just put the reg number through ford and then the vin through Etis and it’s sync 1.1 Sony premium audio package.

I'm not sure what too say then. It is the same controls yes.

What does sync give you that I don't then? I'd like to keep the Sony unit, but hoping to improve on the software behind it?

Thanks.

Edit .Just seen the latest reply. I put my reg on ETIS but it didn't show anything. Can you check for me? EO62LKE?

Sync 1.1 didn't come out until 2014

Nokia Bluetooth/voice was fitted when the MK3 came out , then around 2012/13 sync1.0 2012 (which mine is) then sync 1.1 app link 2014 came out after

So what am i missing then in this version? What makes it better? Does sync pull my contacts and stuff from phone?

All three basically do the same .

Check this website and put your vin in so you can see what you have.

https://secure.ford.co.uk/OwnerServices/SYNC-and-Bluetooth-Support/MobileCompatibility?ref=%2Fowner%2Fresources-and-support%2Fsync-bluetooth#/

As for your original question, if you want sat nav then you will need to source the correct nav screen for your Bluetooth/voice or sync1 2012.

I did mine some time ago and it required a sync 1 nav screen, sd card, a GPS antenna and a little bit of wiring from radio unit to screen for the nav voice to work . Also a fakra cable .

There's quite a few on here who have done it. Do a search and you will find threads with instructions .

Nokia? Sync is a Microsoft technology... sync 1 was released in 2007.

Easiest way to check what you have is reg plate on the Ford website, then copy the vin over to etis and look and what the car came with from the factory [emoji1303]

Your still confusing sync with the earlier Nokia bluetooth/VC module that was fitted from 2011 MK3 focus  part number 1806653. Made by Nokia/novero. Google eBay for images. I've removed/ fitted / diagnosed all variants from the MK2 to mk 3.5. and other models in the ford range

Well I've signed up to ETIS and checked - The Minor features section does say "Less Sync" so I'm guessing it doesnt have it. Thats a shame.

Whats the benefits?

It is true that SYNC was introduced in 2007 in the USA but this system has never been used in Europe. Until the introduction of the SYNC 3 system the European connectivity systems were different from the USA system.

Apart from this Microsoft basically has nothing to do with the European connectivity systems. SYNC was a collaboration project between Ford and Microsoft in the USA. However the partnership between Ford and microsoft was already ended before the SYNC systems were introduced in Europe. Because of the former partnership the SYNC 1.0/1.1 and SYNC 2 APIM (SYNC) modules have software that runs on the microsoft Windows auto embedded operating system. This is basically the only involvement of Microsoft in the European SYNC systems.

To make things clear once and for all below the different European connectivity systems:

* 1st generation Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system Focus MK2 / (early) MK2.5  03-12-2004 --> 25-02-2008
  Bluetooth phone connectivity and voicecontrol.
  Developed in conjunction with Nokia. Modules produces by Nokia

* 2nd generation Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system (both the standard and Sound & Connect system) Focus MK2.5 / (early) MK3  25-02-2008 --> 16-01-2012
  Standard system: Bluetooth phone connectivity and voicecontrol.
  Sound & Connect system: Bluetooth phone connectivity and voicecontrol. + Bluetooth Audio (A2DP), USB and Ipod support.
  Further development of the 1st generation system in conjunction with Nokia. Modules produced by Novero (Novero bought the Nokia automotive division).

* Improved 2nd generation Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system Focus MK3  --> 16-01-2012 --> 18-06-2012
  Bluetooth phone connectivity and voicecontrol. + Bluetooth Audio (A2DP), USB and Ipod support.
  Further development of the 2nd generation system. Modules produced by Ford (FoMoCo).

* SYNC 1.0 system Focus MK3  18-06-2012 --> 06-03-2014
  Bluetooth phone connectivity and voicecontrol. + Bluetooth Audio (A2DP) and USB.
  Further development of the USA SYNC system. Modules produced by Ford (FoMoCo). Software runs on the microsoft Windows auto embedded operating system.

* SYNC 1.1 system Focus MK3 / MK3.5  06-03-2014 --> 2018 (when Ford stopped the production of the MK3.5).
  Bluetooth phone connectivity and voicecontrol. + Bluetooth Audio (A2DP),USB and APPlink

* SYNC 2 system Focus MK3.5  06-10-2014 --> 19-09-2016
  Bluetooth phone connectivity and voicecontrol. + Bluetooth Audio (A2DP) and USB
  Further development of the USA MFT (My Ford Touch) system. Software runs on the microsoft Windows auto embedded operating system.

* SYNC 3 system Focus MK3.5 / MK4  19-09-2016 -->
  Bluetooth phone connectivity and voicecontrol. + Bluetooth Audio (A2DP),USB, APPlink and Android Auto/Apple Carplay support.
  Identical system for all (global) markets. Software runs on the QNX operating system

Thanks Wilko, was hoping you would pop in and clarify.

Thank you. So based on your write up my car should have Sync 1.0 at least as it was registered in September 2012?

Although that's not showing when it was produced. Only when registered. Could have been produced in Jan 2012 and took 10 months to ship and then sell. So would have had the older system in it.

They are build dates not registration dates. As I'm posting on another thread at the moment , a new car can be stood for a very long time before .

Etis shows the build date. PM me your reg no and I can check if you can't find it.

Learn something new every day! Thanks for the clarification guys 🙂

Your car doesn't have SYNC, and I don't think you can get a Ford unit with sat nav that isn't SYNC so you'll have to go aftermarket.
