Engine oil colour?

Featured Replies

When I took delivery of my MK 8 Fiesta one of the first things I did was to check the engine oil. It was getting a bit dark by the time the car had been delivered so although I could see the level on the dipstick was bang on the max mark I didn't notice the colour of the oil in the dim conditions.

Checked the oil in better light today and noticed that it's a light strawberry red/pink in colour. I don't remember seeing that colour of oil before. My MK7 St-Line had a light yellow/green coloured oil.

Anyone else noticed this?

I can't say I have, but I've only looked at it in normal daylight on the dipstick / cloth and it looked completely normal.  Just looks quite clear with a slight brown tint right after a service.

I'll have a look at the spare oil I have in the boot tomorrow (it's too cold right now lol).

Hopefully the dealer hasn't topped yours up with Tizer 😁

So Do I, I much prefer Iron Brew 😄

I've got 3/4 of a litre of the recommended Castrol oil that I bought for my previous MK7 St-Line but only ever put 0.25 litres in after the 2nd service, I think they slightly underfilled it.

Not checked to see if that's what they still recommend for the MK 8 model? It's certainly not the same colour as the stuff in my car now, looks like the same very thin consistency though.

It's Castrol Magnatec 5w20 for the MK8 1.0ltr EcoBoost.

Just had mine serviced and I supplied the oil, much cheaper lol. Paid £33 for 5 litres, better than my garage charging me £12 for each single litre.

The local garage where I now get my wife's SEAT done charges about £4/litre less than the main dealer did.

I often wonder at the unit prices on service invoices and if it's just made up to come to the total quoted price for the service anyway.

For example they always seem to charge you for screen washer top up even if the reservoir is full! - though to be fair I've often found a full bottle of screenwash left in the car when I've picked it up. I've asked (tongue in cheek) if I can have a price reduction instead but been told it's included in the standard price anyway.

If it's a brand new engine, the red colour probably comes from break in oil, used to lube the bearings during manufacture.  Engine oil is always a light 'honey' type colour.

I priced up Lawton's and they were the cheapest main dealer (within reach of me) for my service (2 year) and they came in at £185 + £20 traveling which wasn't bad.  Evans Helshaw wanted £240.  Decided to go with my own trusted local garage for £105 + £33 for the oil.  They actually didn't charge me for screenwash lol, but seemed to have topped it up anyway (woohoo).

@TomsFocus Thanks for the explanation Tom.  I just checked mine and it's as you say, honey colour.

My 2 year is due late Feb. I guess I won't be going there, then!😀

I'd heard about special running in oils put in some cars for the recommended runnning in mileage and once you'd reached that it had to be changed for normal Oil.

There's no mention of anything like that in the manual so I'm assuming I don't need to take it in for an oil change at 1000 miles?

Unless something has altered since I got mine, first recommended change would be at 18,000 miles/2 years whichever comes first. Had mine changed while it was in for the 12 month convenience check, several other members have done likewise.

The red stuff is only a light smear used on the bearings as it's put together but will mix into the oil when run.  Ford don't use any special 'running in' oils now so there's no longer a first oil change at 1k.

OK, thanks guys I'll be doing 18,000 or so a year so it will have a change at the first year service for sure but I might get it done a bit earlier, 18,000 seems like a long way to go without an oil change

Yeah, there's quite a lengthy thread on this somewhere. When I got mine and was advised about the service intervals, I asked what changes had been made to the engine or oil specification to permit the longer interval and was told "nothing".  As you will know from your previous Audi, VW Group also do something similar but they use a different (expensive!) oil for cars on the extended service interval.

I went for a service (read oil change) at twelve months too, just after I bought the car.

Can't be too careful, plus I do a lot of short journeys.
