Mk8 fiesta steering clunk

Featured Replies

Hi, must update my profile. I myself now have a Focus ST-3 diesel estate but the Fiesta is my gf's car.

And it appears that rather annoyingly the warranty expired on the 13th April - but the car *was* under warranty when it went in the first time for this issue so the remedial work should be completed FOC IMO.

If Ford issued a technical service bulletin regarding this part and that it needs updating to cure this issue then that is what they should've fitted in the first place to cure it. Whatever they did (maybe tightened it?) hasn't worked for very long and the problem is back after just a few months. So one might argue that it was fixed just long enough to see out the remainder of the used-car warranty on it (1-year). This is a John Grose Ford main dealer we're talking about here - where we bought the car and where we frequent with both our cars, so you'd expect them to 'do the right thing' and keep us happy.

Well...

Well...

Wellllllll.

To say I'm shocked is an understatement. Ok, so after looking at the invoice (which I never saw as it's gf car) a few months back (for the work completed under warranty), they did over £1000 worth of work and supposedly replaced the entire steering rack(!) Am I right in understanding they bill Ford UK for this work? Because the exact same fault is back and I'm convinced it's that bulletin part. Anyway, after taking it back there Friday just gone, they're quoting us £209 to replace the steering shaft!!! My blood is boiling and I'll be getting this independently looked at to see what's been supposedly changed. Did they really(??) change the entire steering rack under warranty to cure a slight knocking fault? Or tighten it to get it through the remainder of the warranty? We're suspicious. How can they justify charging us £209 to fix this exact same fault? 🤬

My 19 plate ST3 has the same BD column and has just started to make a single click/crack on turning the steering R or L at slow speed or stationary. 5 years old, 25K miles.

Did changing the column solve the problem ?

On my 2018 ST it didn’t, returned after a couple weeks and is going in for another look with its MOT.

This is all very interesting, i'm getting that same clunk at slow speed when flicking the steering wheel in the opposite direction when hard turning at slow speed. Definitely feels like a rack issue or the wheel is lose. There's also a slight intermittent creak coming from the right side wheel arch I believe, unsure if it's related but again, only really shows up at slow speed up to 20mph.

This is on a car with 25k miles ...
