Wheel nuts

Featured Replies

Hi has any one heard of swollen wheel nuts on a ford.i have just had a tyre changed and was warned that ford nuts swell up and the normal socket won't fit. So when I got home I took my wheel brace out and checked and it did not really fit on the drivers side it struggled to get on. The locking wheel worked a treat but the others it was hard. And the car was stood for an hour before I tried. I would not like to be on the side of the motorway with a flat.

Does anyone know what nut you need is it a 19mm? If so I am going to order a 19.5 and a 20 just in case.

Or is it a case of replacing the ford nuts with a better type.?

I would have a look at the suspect nut's. This happened to me when I didn't fully push the socket onto the nut and it slipped and damaged the flats on the nut. Still have trouble getting the nut out of the socket. The Garage may have done the same.

Yes they have they have rounded one do it's in for a replacement free of charge and a discount on a service. But I checked the rest and they all look perfect apart from a little fatter then the rest just struggling to get the wrench on

Do the wheel nuts still have those annoying covers on?

No covers just all nuts

LOL

They are 19mm.

They have thin metal (non removable) covers on them that get damaged over time, particularly with garage air tools.

If its like this, there is an aluminium cover cap. Without the cap an 18mm socket will fit. As above, using power tools will distort the caps.

Oh wow, never knew that, is that a standard on all Fords?

Just been out and had a look at mine as I've never had a wheel off it yet.   I've got the ally wheel nut covers so expect all Fiestas have.

So if you pull/slide the cover off, you'll see an 18mm wheel nut. Am surprised the garage never told you.

Wow thanks for all the replies.. This forum is great and full of helpful people. I'm going to replace all the nuts of my car for solid nuts.

Yep, has been for about 20 years!

I used to glue them back on with Araldite or similar.

Sierras had solid "chrome" nuts as did my '98 Mondeo and with anything since, did what Brian did - use Araldite!

I always use a 6 point socket (not a 12 point) on them, and a torque wrench when tightening.

If you mean the key, then very unlikely.  There are several different designs for each key otherwise they wouldn't be very secure.

On the website when I go to order a new locking nut key and it tell me to type in my car make and year, it says it’s the same one for the 2013,14,15,16 etc

It's the same type.  But each key has a different code.  If it's the notch type, the notches will be in different places.

It's the same way a front door key looks the same as next doors, but won't fit their lock as it has a different code cut into it.

There are likely to be about 10 different codes for locking wheel nut keys so you need to know which code yours is.  Some websites can decipher this code using a high quality image taken top down over the nut.
