Since it wouldn't start that would have been a bit difficult for me 😀. I don't have home cover in my breakdown package.

  • Ok, time for a final update. I fitted the battery yesterday and the car fired up instantly on pressing the button. The oil light extinguished within about 2 seconds. Having satisfied myself it would r

Im no expert but I would suspect that the Crash Input DTC will prevent the engine starting. It MIGHT have been caused by the low battery condition. If the battery is now showing a reasonable charge th

Indeed. You nailed the diagnosis from the start .

Took my first drive with the new battery today and the Stop-Start is now working. I wonder for how long . . ..

Incidentally @TomsFocus you were right about the start button. With the new battery if the ignition is aready on pressing the clutch and then the button does start the engine.

I wasn't even old enough to drive when Mike joined the forum!    Possibly the longest term regular on here...longer than Alex, Stoney, Roger and Lenny!

But unlike several of the more recent members I've never worked on cars for a living so my knowledge is still limited to what I've learned from them 😀.

I’m thinking about proactively putting a new battery in my ST. The FoMoCo ones are utter sh1te and my stop/start has never actually worked in the whole time I’ve had the car (since Feb) as even after a decent drive there’s not enough juice in the battery when I go into neutral.

Have you tested the battery voltage?  If it sat at the dealer for a while before you bought it, you might get away with just charging it fully and resetting the BMS.  Ideally on a battery charger but I did it on my PFL at the end of a ~20 mile 70mph run and it worked perfectly for the next 6 months that I owned the car at least.

There's alot of battery snobbery with owners, thinking their car is so special, they need the best, most expensive brand available. For most of us, we simply want to get in our car, for us to turn it on, and for it to start. There are 100s of nationwide 'fast fitters' that specialise in batteries. They haven't grown multi £Million industries by selling cr*p.  Yes, some end up faulty and I have experienced such, but keep the receipt in your glovebox, drive in, let them test, and if below par, you'll drive out with a brand new battery.

I have used a local quick fit style center for over 30 years, never had a battery issue they couldn't sort for me (though plenty of car electrical issues LOL).

The best known is KwikFit, so if you have any snob tendencies, just hold your nose, go let someone else do the spannering, and keep your receipt 🤣

Halfords will come to you and fit a new battery

Should anyone else find themselves in the same situation

My 'local' fitter will also do same (for free), but I didn't want to show off LOL

start stop places a lot more demand on the battery, hence the system is designed to kill it when the battery is struggling...

stop start also put lots of stress on the engine, sensible owners disable it for the longevity benefits on the drive train. To question if that will put undue stress on the environment is to be totally out of touch.  A new battery, starter and then engine and exhaust system, is a lot more environmentally damaging in resources and energy use than the 10 gallons of fuel you'll use by having it off.

its is fitted exclusively to increase car sales.  it has never contributed to saving the planet... its is actually causing harm to the planet by using it, but of course its very beneficial to the bottom line of the manufacturing sector

Is there actually a way of permanently disabling it?

I won’t be taking it to KwikFit - not because of snobbery but just because I don’t like Overpaying someone to do something I can do myself!

Also there’s plenty battery snobbery because not all batteries are created equal. Cars are built to a budget and corners can be cut. For example I changed out the battery on my 3.2 Ranger because the battery in it from the factory didn’t really have the necessary CCA to turn over such a big engine....

I like Yuasa personally because I’ve had good experiences with them, but really if you can get the right rating of battery at a good price then happy days. My FOC Halfords discount card me be getting called upon soon..

If that's the case, you'd never take your car anywhere, to have any work done on it, considering your own labour charge is always free. My point was that if you can buy a battery from a 'fitting' operation, for the same price as trotting off to EuroParts and having to fit it yourself, why would you...

Yep exactly. I almost never take my cars or bike anywhere to have work done on it because I can do most things myself.

The price for the part may be the same, but I don’t pay the labour charge. KwikFit will have a minimum labour charge too I would imagine so for small jobs it’s even worse getting charged half an hours labour for a 5 minute job.

I’ve mentioned before on this forum that a dealer tried to charge me £14.99 once to change the battery in my key fob. Bought the battery for pennies and changed it myself in approx. 18 seconds.

LOL, you obviously have never been to one before. The price they quote includes fitting, that includes tires as well though you probably fit those yourself too! 🤣

No I don’t do tyres myself as I don’t have a tyre machine (yet).

I expect forscan can do it.

Thanks, I'm just trying to get that all set up, I think I just need a lead.

Don't forget to save up your old batteries, worth around a fiver each at the scrap man.

Or you can ship direct to St Greta, C/O Extinction Rebellion 🤣

Disabling S/S permanently would technically mean your car is not up to pollution specs anymore, since you are preventing pollution reducing systems from working. IDK if that would be a problem anywhere, but I think the MOT tests might have something to say about it.

OTOH I disable S/S every single time I start my car, luckily it's just a simple button press in the center console.
