Water ingress

Featured Replies

Good afternoon guys. I'm new in this section, because my wife has has just bought a 58 plate 5dr 1.4. She has just come back from a little run and has noticed the rear o/s footwell is quite wet. Could anyone please shed some light on this issue for me because my knowledge is more focus mk2 based. Thanks, Simon.

I've read where water was coming in from the black plastic roof rack gutter at the back, open the hatch and check the top left joint, there's been a few fiesta's where the sealant has cracked open and allowing water in, going into the boot area, then into the rear footwell.

If you bought it from a dealer, take it back and get them to sort it out.

I've found out taking a car back to a dealer isn't the best advice as they'll bodge it and no doubt look through the car and also use it to ferry people or fetch supplies.

Hi guys, thanks for replying. I've just taken a look and under the rear carpet is soaking. The front well is very similar too. The n/s wells are dry, as is the boot.

58 plate could be a late Mk6 or early Mk7, can you confirm which of those it is?

It's a mk7

You have obviously got a dodgy dealer! Note the mileage before you leave it with them and get them to give you a 'note of satisfaction' that you can sign if they've rectified the problem. I would still take it back.

How hard is removing the black trim on the roof please guys?

Never removed ours but looking at the end sections it looks glued down, so if it is you gunna have to be extra careful removing it, on some fords the black runners are held in place by clips.

I'm going to try pouring water over the car including plenty over the o/s windows to check if the door membranes are leaking. Can someone please tell me exactly what the membranes are please because i watched a youtube video last night. It was a firm in Essex who specialise in water leaks. The water was coming out of the bottom of the door from the drainage holes as per normal but, also from another point which wasn't right. Thanks, Simon.

I think it's the foam/rubber seal which is between the door & door panel, stops any large amounts of water getting in.

Modern cars have a removeable hard inner panel behind the plastic door card.  These panels hold the window regulator etc.  The edges of these panels are originally sealed into the door before being bolted on tight.  If they're removed to replace a window reg or lock solenoid, they don't always seal back up properly.  If they are leaking, you should see water coming from between the plastic door card and the metal door frame.

Well I've been out this afternoon and poured lots of 💧 over the windows and roof o/s. I can't find any sign of 💧 leaking from the door except for the drain holes as per normal. The foam/rubber up under the dashboard behind the pedel is also soaking. Could the windscreen seal be at fault and it's all running to the rear. I'm trying my best to absorb as much as possible and leaving the doors open while it's sunny and a bit windy. Please help. Thanks, Simon.

Make the most of the sun there, been raining for 3 days solid here!

It does sound like it could be the windscreen then.  Not a common fault but it can happen on any car.  Would be worth checking the scuttle panel is fitted correctly so that water can't run behind it and also check the drain holes under the scuttle aren't clogged.

Does the car have a sun roof out of interest?

Thanks for replying. No, there's no sunroof on the car. I'll check the scuttle panel tomorrow if I have the energy and the weather. I hadn't thought of that! Thanks Tom.

I had a bad leak on one car, not a Fiesta though, but I used babies nappies to absorb the water, placed new nappies face down where it was getting the wettest, putting a building brick on each nappy, pretty good at soaking up and holding water, unlike towels that don't.

Ian thank you so much for your wonderful idea

That sounds like unnecessary single use plastic waste tbf...

Last leak I fixed was just a gasket missing on the rear light clluster after an accident repair. Sometimes the leak can be water thrown up from the tyres so not always easy to spot if your pouring water on.

That aimed at me ? So how many plastic bottles of pop do you buy a week and throw into the bin and not think anything of it ?

None, I only drink tap water.  But pop bottles are recyclable anyway, nappies aren't.

You might want to research that quote ?

Not really, councils around here don't take them so although technically they can be recycled, they all end up in general refuse here.  Same as crisp packets and cat food pouches and coffee cups etc.

Does your local council recycle them?

Do know Walkers crisps and other charities have been recycling their and other makes of crisp bags & outer packaging for years, all you need to do is not bin them but collect enough up to a good amount and send the lot off to Walkers! Its Freepost, so if you want to cut waste, then post the bags off to Walkers, trouble is not many know of such schemes as its never on the TV or any papers, maybe they should to get everyone aware what 'TerraCycle' does.

As for the other question about the nappies....Yes.

Anyway Tom, not looking for arguments, just a bit of banter 🎅
