Louder Exhaust

Featured Replies

Hey, got a 2013 ST about 3 months ago but im wanting it to sound a bit louder and sportier. havent got a clue about exhausts or where to start with this idea! any help/info would be great, thanks.

And there's me hoping to make mine quieter.

How deep is your pocket i would stick to something like mountune which won't effect MOT emissions and are ford approved.

Milltek, Cobra & Skorpion are generally the go-to companies as they offer exhausts for a wide range of performance cars. Many are customisable to (non-res vs res, tail pipe size etc.).

It really depends what sort of sound you're after and if you want to have a full exhaust (known as "turbo-back") or save £400+ on a downpipe/sports-cat and get just a "cat-back" (which will still run you up a good £500 mind). If you plan on going for power gains as well as noise then I'd go full turbo-back for the cost. The biggest restriction in the exhaust is the catalytic converter. Therefore most of the power gain by changing an exhaust is gained by changing to a sports cat (or no cat if you're a little naughty). Sadly cats are also very expensive so it's really a case of how much you want to spend.

It will fit if that's what you mean. Whether you want a resonator and bore size is up to you.

I would check to see it complies to decibel regulations and complies with emissions for MOT otherwise it won't pass.

Wait isn't the whole point of this topic to find a louder exhaust :confused1:lol. I guarantee you won't find an aftermarket performance exhaust that meets the sound requirements. A cat back wont change emissions so not an issue.

Most big-bore and sports exhausts are not legal on public roads in the UK due to their excessive noise levels and extra emissions. Drivers caught with an excessively noisy exhaust may receive an on-the-spot fine of £50, and could have their car taken off the road until the offending exhaust is removed.

Worth complying?

What you need is a switchable exhaust valve like mercedes so you can go stealth

I would think that your insurance company would be very interested in your adjustments to your car.

hmm. i literally have no idea what im doing exhaust wise haha. gonna have to do some research before i buy anything anyway

What's wrong with the one you got? (other than not loud enough😁) i would wait till it needs replacing unless you cant live with it. You possibly would be able to drive for years without getting pulled its that day you are unlucky it just might get worse discretion of officer unless its an accident always worth being respectful.

nothing wrong with mine at all, i just wanted something that sounded not necessarily louder, more nicer/sportier.  yeah you have a point.
mountune is probably my favourite sounding one

Several local lads have been pulled for 'loud' exhausts lately and forced to replace with standard ones.

Daft really as they weren't that loud and they weren't doing anything else wrong to get pulled.  Discrimination as they were young lads in old cars?  Probably.  Either way, it's tainted their view of the cops now.  Same happened to me when I owned the Mk6 ST150...only car I've ever been pulled in for no other reason than I looked young...I was 24!  Felt sorry for any balding 17 year olds.

Technically, ANY sound increase over standard is now illegal.  The best option is to buy a car that's louder as standard!

Being an old bloke now I'd be more interested in wether the mountune added power, rather than noise.  Or at least both. 😀

The map adds power, the exhaust and intake only really add noise...but careful saying that to anyone that's spent on them, the placebo effect gets stronger the more you pay for something!

As you say there were several, I wonder if the police had had complaints especially from mothers trying to get young children to sleep.

You would have more luck getting tranquillisers to make the kids sleep than seeing a policeman pull a motorist for loud exhaust round here.

It was on dual carriageways, nowhere near any houses.  Traffic cops waited in lay-bys for them to pass...easy night for them!
