I'm a bit of a cynic myself Stephen, but it's always a pleasure to come across a real master!😀

Another thing I've noticed is a lack of super E5 unleaded - there's been a "sorry no super unleaded"  sign at the local Tesco for weeks.

Bit of an issue for those who own cars not compatible with E10, despite the promises of continuing availability when it was introduced last year.

Yeah, I noticed that at Tesco and Esso last few weeks.

There are certainly more ev's out there now. There's a few around where I live. All got proper wall chargers . Only one without a wall charger and that's a Tesla. Probably just rely on the Tesla fast chargers .

Down my street we have Renault Zoe, Kia e niro, 2 BMW's, e golf and Tesla.

I read that EV now account for 23% of new passenger car sales. After 3 years my neighbour has got rid of his Tesla and got a Polestar , no regrets about EV there then.

I'll check when I walk past but 99% sure he's still using the Tesla wall charger with the new Polestar car, and I'm not sure what charger the Mitsubishi EV household has., but they did have a different make of EV before.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, %age of EV sales seems to vary widely depending on area, probably linked to availability of public chargers - I think it was as high as 40% in Cambridge but only about 10% here in North Yorkshire where charger provision is pretty poor.

That said, York Council for one are making a big push with installations at P &  R sites. I had a quick wander round one this morning while the Mrs was doing some shopping** and there were 8 rapid chargers and 30 others, presumably for those parking all day. Only downside was none of them were working yet!

I've wondered about wallbox compatibility, as quite a few installers are linked to manufacturer schemes e.g. Pod Point have tie-ups with VW Group, Mercedes and now BMW I believe. Surely if you have a Tesla (or whatever) wallbox it will work with other makes?

(**I hasten to add that, as I mentioned on another thread, I spent most of the time looking at the Puma ST in the nearby Ford dealer.😀)

No.

Tesla have there own system.

Domestic wallboxes for most makes are little more than a heavy duty socket, some have built in timers but on the whole most are quite dumb, but can usually connect to a larger number of different manufactures. The actual charger when using these type of supplies is actually part of the vehicle and takes about 8 hours to get a reasonable amount of charge.

Potential buyers should think of Tesla, like 'Apple'. Apple do not work with anything else unless Apple make it and can charge you money for it. Most EVs I have read about are like Android, yes, some manufacturer specifics, but on the whole, you have a much wider range of products available to you...

Talking Apple/Android, anyone know if the Mk4.5 will have Carplay or Auto Android without a cable? If so, how would that work ..Bluetooth or mobile data?
I’ve a iPhone but the cable connection is shoogly and keeps on disconnecting itself. I’m glad I got Ford nav but would probably use Apple CarPlay if the connection was perfect.

About Apple exclusivity I read a year or two ago that bmw / mini would only be compatible with Apple products. It’s part of an evil plan to take over the world.

Just been for my walk and the guy with the new Polestar is definitely using his Tesla wall box to charge it.

Despite manufactures best efforts, I'm sure some enterprising folk will be making 'adapters' so that all sorts of wall charger can charge all sorts of cars...

Polestar 2 spotted charging at a Tesla Supercharger in the Netherlands. Tesla has announced that it has started the pilot program for letting some other electric vehicles charge at its Superchargers

Conversely, a guy near me who previously had an Audi E-tron, now has a Tesla Model 3 plugged in to his wallbox. Could have had the wallbox changed of modified of course but I thought not as the Audi was there one day, Tesla the next.

Another one of our neighbours had 2 octopus energy vans outside his house today. As I drove past saw they were fitting a wall box. He must be having a new car as currently he drives a 59 plate Porsche SUV thing and his wife a fiat 500.

New Tesla's have an adapter lead/plug which allows them to connect up to most standard wallboxes. It does mean the Tesla's smart charge function of controlling the wallbox for load share does not work, and it charges at a slower rate than if it was a Tesla wallbox.

Ah, that makes sense then. It won't be worrying me anyway as even if I go electric it won't be a Tesla - that giant touchscreen and lack of physical controls would drive me nuts even quicker than most modern cars.😀

It's like the way you can 'bluetooth' a photo from Apple to Apple device, but Apple will not allow you to bluetooth a photo from an Andriod - b*stards!

Anyone else watch the Ch5 show last night, 'Should I buy an Electric Car?'. Nothing really new for me. The journalist used a Ford Mustang Mach e for his travels. Usual issue of troubles finding a working charger, and a myriad of apps/payment methods in trying to get them to work, though it did finish with the 'garage of the future' where there were about a dozen chargers, all working, and accepting standard contactless payment.

Cost of the cars currently still an issue, though the coffee shops of the future are in for a boom as they all suggest whilst waiting for a charge to go grab a coffee LOL I don't 'do' coffee, so have no desire to spend a tenner on a designer paper cup of the stuff with a sticky bun - maybe you could just bring a flask and sit in your car 🤣

Apparently government are aiming for 300,000 public chargers by 2030, I sure hope they didn't use the same quantity surveyor as they used for HS2!

Just about to ask the same thing but you beat me to it!

Felt very much the same as you, my answer might be "possibly, but not yet" until the issues with charging etc that we have exhaustively discussed on here are resolved.

The Minister (Trudy Harrison) again promised the ludicrous payment procedure with apps etc would be sorted out and availability of card payment would be mandatory, but they've been saying that for at least 3 years and I've not seen much sign of prigress, as I often report.

So that's less than 8 years and the clocks ticking.

The electrical infrastructure of the UK will struggle to carry the increased demand. It will mean replacing local substations and bigger pole transformers not to mention the need to increase cable sizes. If we take an average of each charging point requiring 30 Amps that is an extra 900,000 Amps. So forgetting about just how we are going to generate all the electricity needed (and also forgetting about we are all going to be heating our homes with electricity) I can not even begin to imagine how in 8 years all the behind the scenes work can be in place. Also isn't copper very expensive and in quite short supply?

It's OK, I believe there are plans to expand the child network that already mine much of the Lithium used in battery cars to branch out and mine additional copper too... (They just have to work out how to obtain the additional electricity needed to smelt the mining process, though I think they are planning some more coal powered electricity stations to solve that LOL)
