Can I replace 16 inch alloys with 17 inch without any extra work?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

just looking for some advice. I have a 2011 Ford Fiesta 1.6ltr diesel that needs a new alloy. I’m really struggling to find the one that matches tho as I’m looking to buy second hand (I’ve attached a photo if anyone knows where I can get this - the tyre size is 195 45 16).

so alternatively I’ve been looking at changing over to a complete set with a different pattern - now I’ve found a set of 4 used 17 inch black Ford alloys for sale for just a bit more than replacing just the one of what I need. But these are 17 inch, tyre size 205 40 17 - does anyone know if I can use these without having to change or do any more works on the car?

thank you!!

Yes they will fit fine.

No problem.

So I went ahead and bought them, but the garage is saying they’re not Ford wheels and so don’t fit on my car. Size is fine it’s just the pins don’t fit in the 4 holes on the tyre. I’ve tried to take them back but the seller is refusing this. He is claiming that they came of his Ford KA. Could he be telling the truth? It’s a 52 plate KA which now has 13inch tyres on.

thank you 🙂

Sure it's a 52 plate Ka, not a 62 plate?  62 plate Ka's are Fiat 500s underneath and have a smaller PCD than Fiestas.

The KA never came with 17 inch alloys. Can you post a picture of the alloys you have?

If it's a private sale then you're stuck.
You could take the seller to small claims but it will cost you.

You didn't buy them through eBay by any chance did you?

No I bought them on Facebook market place so stuck with them, only had them 2 hours as I went straight to the garage to get them put on but the sellers are just  being nasty. I’ve spoken to citizens advice and they say I have enough evidence to go to a small claims - so I reckon I’ll do it, even at a cost, to wipe the smile from the sellers face.

he definitely claimed they came off a 05 plate as he pointed to the car when I went to try and get my money back. When he shut the door on me I had a closer look and they were 13 inch tyres on the car so in my head I’m thinking there’s no way it could’ve had 17 inches on it.

ive attached a photo here. I took them to a wheel specialist today who’s told me they’re not genuine Ford and they’re aftermarket alloys.
They’ve advised me now that if I want to sell them on to sell them as 4 x 17 x 7J, PCD 100. Although I have no idea what this really means.

thank you all for your help so far 🙂

Yep that's not a Ford alloy, just someone's put a Ford centre cap on it.

It's the PCD of 4x100 that's wrong. You need a PCD of 4x108 for a Fiesta. It is possible to get hub adapters to change 4x108 to 4x100 to fit the wheels to your car. If the other 3 wheels are in the same condition as the one you posted (rattlecan paint job, curb damage around the edges and budget tyre) then they would cost more than the alloys are worth.

The only comeback you have is if they advertised it as a genuine Ford alloy. Otherwise your stuck with them I'm afraid as it's not down to the seller to ensure they fit your car.

thank you @Luke4efc that really helps.

I think I’ll have to try and resell them myself, they’re all in the same condition as what you see so like you say will cost me more to keep them with an adapter. And the word genuine wasn’t used in the add but they were sold as “Ford alloys” - dont suppose anyone knows if they would ever fit on a Ford of any type? Or what car they would fit?

And if you know of anyone that’s looking to buy then let me know 😂

don't know how much you have to spend but you can get 16" brand new £140 per corner.

The problem is they're worth nothing on the used market. You'd be lucky to get £100 for a set of 4 without tyres.

True but 4 buckled ones waste of money too! Tyres general cost of running a car.

Just because they're used doesn't mean they will be buckled lol.

By the time you've added the cost of a tyre onto a new wheel you're looking at over £200. I've seen loads of sets sell with tyres for not much more than that. Plus you'd probably end up with odd tyres across an axle with different wear on each if you only bought 1 wheel/tyre which isn't ideal.

A lot of people on here complaining about tyres going down on wheels - probably cus they are buckled from driving up kerbs or over pot holes good reason to sell them.

They might only need one wheel and lets be honest some people take pride in there cars so don't want scuffed wheels me included.

1.6 diesel isn't exactly a high performance car  so different tread depths wouldn't hurt and is not illegal however if it were me i would change all tyres or at least in pairs specially this time of year. Alternatively tyre rotation worst on back.

and the tyres aren’t a problem for me, I’ve always bought them in pairs so I have one ready to go on.

the new set I bought all came with matching tyres too, budget I know, but they look brand new with a lot of tread. Hopefully I just get something back for them so the whole £200 I spent isn’t a complete waste.

They must have come off of 'a' Ford surely...why would someone stick Ford centre caps on a Vauxhall?

4x100 was a pretty common size but not so much now.  They'll fit a lot of older models such as - Corsa, Astra, Mini, Civic, 3 Series, Golf, Polo, Swift, Clio, MX5...they'll even fit an old Porsche 911!

You don't want to change the rolling radius too much.

I think they put the Ford caps in just to try and get them sold - they had been listed agesss when I bought them, little miss muggins 😂😂

would they have fitted an old Ford then?

Not that I can think of, Escorts and Capri's were 4x108, and I'm sure the Fiesta has 4x108 been since the Mk1 in the 70's.  Was hoping one of the older members might know for sure though!

In fairness, they might have been fitted to anything with with adapters or wobble bolts.

Yes, I think you're right Tom. My first Ford ('66 Cortina Mk 1) was 4x108, and the wheels were interchangeable with those on my mate's Mk 2 (which were actually Rostyles off a Capri), so Ford have used that fitment on a lot of cars for a long time.
