Chrome (Rear?) Bumper Identification

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I recently found this chrome bumper while clearing out my grandparents' house and garage. No one has any memory of my granddad ever having anything Ford-made, so we're struggling to identify it.

It's new, with its part sticker, though the sticker is unreadable. It did have its plastic packaging, but it had been eaten by mice (including another part sticker).

Any help working out what it's from would be greatly appreciated!

First thought was Mk 1 or 2 Cortina, but then I saw that cut out in the upper edge (just visible in image below) so  I thought Mk 1 Escort? though the one in your photos seems to have more bolt holes and looks wider. Have you got the dimensions - someone may be able to work it out from there?

Thanks Eric.

I was assuming the 4 bolt holes would imply 2 overriders, and 2 for attaching to the brackets. But Ford Anglias have 4 bolts for attaching to brackets (but no cut out), so who knows.

The dimensions are as follow:

 - Total length: 59" / 1500mm
 - Distance between the bolt holes in a given pair: 7.25" / 185mm
 - Distance between 2 inner bolt holes: 38" / 965mm
 - Distance between 2 outer bolt holes: 52.5" / 1340mm
 - Cut-out size: 13" / 330mm
 - Width: 3" / 80mm

Okay, I've worked this out.

It's off a Mk1 Escort Estate. They had double width brackets so needed two holes.

For some reason I never thought about estates. Should have, because back in the day a mate had a Mk 1 Escort Estate!

All you need now is to solve the mystery of what your grandad was doing with a spare bumper for a car he apparently never had!😃

Good question 😄 Having asked around a bit, the theory is that it was moved to my grandparents' house during a previous house clearance when a great-uncle died back in the 80s. Sounds plausible so I'm going with that 😊
