dull knocking sound between 20mph and 30mph from engine

Featured Replies

Hi guys, new to the forum so go easy, was wondering if anyone has ever come across this problem before.

2011 Zetec S,80k on the clock

Started a few weeks ago,if im driving, windows up,sterio off and say im in 3rd gear, between 20 and 30 there is this dull thumping sound,a bit like dull clapping,u go over 30 it goes away, same as going below 20,braking and clutching..could have sworn i heard it going 50 odd aswell but was hard to tell with general road noise in these little cars.

Its been to the garage today, they say no noise coming from wheel bearings and cant see any other problems with the car, they took it for a test drive and could hear the noise, suggested gearbox specialist.

Went to one,he took it for a drive, hears it but reckons its not a gear box issue.he said usually when he tests a car he can tell within 100 yards if its a gearbox problem, says hes never heard this before.

Went to tyre specialist and they say tyres wont do that to a car, they had a apparently ford guru guys there who say he has never heard of this problem before.

Anyone any ideas.

many thanks.

aodan.

i had this issue with my fiesta style a little while ago but it was more of a rolling sound than a thumping. it could be something simple like a lose ball joint or drive shaft.

no problem it depends who you go to some garages would have looked at that straight away, do you notice any nose when turning left or right?

nope nothing,runs great everywhere else

hmmm my best guess would be your driveshaft then or ball joint make sure there is no unwanted movement on your driveshaft
