I would normally say don't because it costs a lot more but You get peace of mind and the dealer has no getout if the car should fail under warranty.

Yesterday I had my 2019 Focus serviced for the very first time (9460 miles) just over 24 months old. Poor Arnold Clark can only scrape a living at the very reasonable £272.50 they charged for the oil and filter change.

Normally I would never think of paying such stupid prices but as you have said I have done it for "peace of mind" and it's where I bought the car.

They then did offer to replace the brake fluid for another £60 ( I declined the offer ). Then today after doing only 40 miles my car has popped up a message saying the adblue is low. Pity the garage didn't mention that yesterday, and my Ford app is still screaming at me to book the car in for service as the oil has only 7% life left. I'll wait till Monday befor contacting them an asking why my electronic service record hasn't been updated.

Lost one, but it didn't break 😉

There is an emerging pattern of Ecoboost engines. A few early ones had cooling system pipes corrode and wreck the engines. That is now largely past. The engine has a belt which runs in oil in order to double its life. Unfortunately, short journeys build up chemicals that separate out some of the compounds within the oil and these attack the belt. They cause particles to flake off the belt which usually doesn't break but the particles get sucked up into the oil pump which then being blocked stops pumping the oil. The engine literally has a heart attack. The cautious and the old hands here will tell you that the best thing to do is to have the oil and filter changed every six thousand miles. This is  very cautious indeed, being as Ford have extended service intervals to three times that but  it is pretty certain to give the engine a good service life because it doesn't allow the buildup of these nasties. I'm quite happy to adopt that schedule, it is less than half a penny a mile on the running costs. A set of ramps (don't need to be new if they are sound) and  three tools for under £10 the lot and you can do an oil and filter change on your own once the warranty runs out.

Hi Blue, and welcome from a newbie of a month ago.

I'm a worrier (like you seem to be, or probably more so) and you've asked some of the questions that have flitted through my mind. At least my car is new! And some of the answers you've been given have reassured me.

Like you, I wondered about when to change gear, as I think the little hand urging one to do so comes to life about 200 revs below when I would intuitively change up.

I'm not particularly interested in cars, but at least I've joined this Forum to provide me with some knowledge about Fiestas.

Congrats on your new car! 😄

Thanks everyone for your advice and support, much appreciated. 🙂

I've decided I'm going to keep my car. I'm really happy with it. I will just make sure to service it properly and hopefully that will be okay. Thanks again. 🙂

Is Halfords a good choice? Should I check in their description if their full service provide an oil, tire and coolant check?

No, they're probably the worst place along with kwikfit. Just find a local independent recommended to you by family/friends and just make sure they use the right parts.

I've had six Fiestas and I've had them serviced regularly.   I've never had one break down.

We've had five, same story😃

Greetings to you too. You've made an excellent choice of car. The Ford Fiesta is a super little car, has a loyal and wide fan base and retains value more than any other small super mini size car, that alone says all you need to know about it.

If you do 10,000 motorway miles a year, then worry not. The car will warm up and run reliably. You should service it annually, preferably use a ford dealer as they will certainly not only do the job properly, but will complete any recall and additional service bulletin items that may need attention. They are the small fixes they do to stop problems they'd rather not tell us about. Just quietly sort them out.

Now, as to your original questions and driving style. The 1.0 Ecoboost can be all things to all people. It produces a nice power spread and responds well to both economical driving and revving the nuts off it. I'd stick to the former though.

On the basis that there really is no such thing as a silly question, just a healthy interest to learn, the Rev counter is the gauge on the panel in front of you, next to the speed gauge. A needle will move round and show you how fast your engine is spinning. It is limited by mechanical forces to a maximum and of course the minimum is idle or nearly 1,000rpm. The engine is happiest around 2,000 or just below, and for more power to accelerate it will want to be closer to 3,000rpm. The higher speed allows the air to flow better and generate more torque. By all means change up at 2,000rpm if driving gently, and wait till 3,000 if being a little more keen. Your assumed figures of 15 for 2nd gear, 20 for 3rd, 30 for 4th, etc are perfectly fine. It's not a race by any means.

Enjoy your car, it's your key to freedom and adventure. Or work, as needs be. E10 fuel is fine too. Just concentrate on smoothness, in clutch and throttle. The smoother you drive the longer your car lasts.

Best wishes,

Mark.

Hi Mark, thanks for your reply. Thanks for answering some of my questions that I was a little unsure on.

Hiii, I recently purchased a Ford Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost (2016) and really wanted to hear some opinions from some people who know about these cars.

Just a few quick questions..

1) Is it true the ecoboost engine breaks after a few months/years use? Should I be worried? I bought from Bristol Street Motors and have a 3 year warranty with them so would it cover it?

2) I’m struggling to really know what gear to use for what speed. In my old car, you could clearly hear the engine making a loud sound and struggling when it was in the wrong gear. But this car is so much more efficient I can’t really hear much noise. Is this accurate? 1st gear 0-15mph 2nd gear 15-30mph 3rd gear 30-40mph 4th gear 40-50mph 5th gear 50-70mph.

3) Finally, when moving around in first gear I can hear a weird noise in my car can’t really describe it… but the car was just fully serviced so is it normal noises?

if anyone can answer these questions for me, I would be grateful thank you!

Hi and welcome.

I have the same car and I drive mine like its a diesel as the 1.0 puts out a good amount of torque low down so it pulls along quite happy from 1800rpm up. When driving try to keep the revs below 2400 as this engine is at its most efficent due to the ECU going into split injection mode In short a small amount of fuel is sprayed in during the intake stroke then again during compression thus allowing the air fuel to mix better for a more complete combustion.

Aother thing  with the 5 speed gearbox you only need to use first gear when starting off from stationary unless on a hill.

Good luck with the car.

Don't try driving it below 1800 though. It isn't a Diesel. If you change up and find that you are below 1800, change up again.

Sounds like you were wasting fuel in that diesel, 1800rpm is motorway cruising in mine!!

£272? Hell, was it ‘gold plated’?For an oil change & filter?Typical ‘stealership’ prices.Even Ford in Australia is not that expensive. Then you have a brake fluid change @ £60? When I had my GT done a couple of years ago it was half that & my local dealer.Go to an independent.

Oil changes are the biggest thing in these engines,on time & frequently, oil & a filter is cheap,a blown engine is not.I do mine every six months,or there abouts.Overkill? Perhaps, perhaps not.If you only do short runs,it is highly advisable.Warranty? If it is not a factory supported warranty, make sure you read what is covered & not covered,a lot of these warranty’s are not worth the paper they are written on.Do your research on the company that has written the policy. My stepson purchased  a 2016 XR6 Ford Falcon from a large Sydney Ford dealer, the loan he applied for also had a warranty attached(Xtra cost of course.)The vehicle developed engine issues, one cam,was gone & a couple of lifters, both cams will have to be replaced & all the lifters,(only a couple are faulty)but while everything is apart, they will do all of them.Warranty? They won’t cover all of it,they will cover $4,000,he is out of pocket by around $1,400.

This is the Fiesta forum. The OP is UK based. Different laws and prices apply here so your contribution, though doubtless well meaning is of little practical help to him.

As I alluded to,it pays to read the fine print in these policies, most countries are the same in regards to this stuff, they will not cover everything, that is just plain fact,it is a product that most used car dealers ‘up sell’ & get a nice commission for doing so.It is no different in the UK(I have relatives over in Devon) as it is here in Australia.Usually there are strings attached, car has to be serviced @ the selling dealer,& at more frequency. It is a money spinner, nothing more.A lot of new car dealers also ‘throw’ extra warranty in,strings attached of course. No such thing as a free meal as they say.I hear what you are saying Anon, but it does not change the facts.
