Glow plug circuit fault

Featured Replies

Hi people.having issues with my 2007 fiesta 1.4tdci.It has a intermittent fault that is throwing up a flashing Amber light on dash, and putting engine in limp mode.have run a IDS diagnostic. Fault code PO3080(Glowplug circuit)What I can't understand is why this is happening at any point while driving.mostly when engine is up to temperature and glowplugs aren't active.Glowplugs and relay/ wiring good.Does anybody know the location of the (Glow Plug Control Unit) Not the Glowplug relay. Many thanks

that sounds like the same area as my injector problem i had almost the same thing but it was with the injector wiring not the glow plugs, but they do run through the same harness so i wouldn't be shocked if it needs new wires. i plan on doing mine when i have time and more info on where things run but might be worth you having a look at my post/topic "1.4 TDCI DuraTorQ Injection/glow plugs loom." could be anywhere in the loom thats split or could just be the connector at the top. unfortunately without removing all the wires to check you might not be able to find out. with the injector cables it was just over the gear box inside the loom a few of them had rubbed through, when the car was moving and vibrating they would randomly touch flagging up the issue. but it was only by chance i found that out. i planned to replace the loom anyway after so many people having issues with the loom and nobody mentioning a fix. so im slowly working out where everything go's and rewiring it with NEW non ford wires and running them where they wont get messed up. might end up with a little more weight but it wont add up to enough to notice any difference especially in a car thats not a sports car to start with.

good luck finding your issue if you get it fixed let everyone know what it was and how you fixed it 🙂

Thanks for those pointers.I have removed air filter housing,And check/sprayed large round electrical connector that feeds power to injectors and glowplugs. This fault is really odd.sometimes it's months & months before it triggers  And Amber light on dash only flash for 30 seconds.Other times it can be alot longer.Anyways still can't find that elusive glowplug control module. And beginning to think it's may be integrated inside ECU.

not sure exactly how it all runs myself yet its on my list of things to find out and replace but i can tell you there is a big relay box on the back of the battery box that has a relay in it for the glow plugs, my understanding is they run from the glow plugs through the loom to the relay and the return back from the relay out to the PCM but i have not confirmed this.

Yes that is the glowplug relay(5 pin)Most people with a similar issue to mine choose to replace this first(easy fix)I have tested mine and it is operating as should. Attached are some pics of the Glowplug Control module.where this is hidden god only knowsScreenshot_20220109-181333_Chrome.thumb.jpg.bf0c53c2a8770a9a03dd0bd122df9525.jpg

There is also much higher amp fuses that lives literally down the back of the battery ranging from 40-60 amp. I think one of them is for the glows. The main power for this fuse box is right on top of the battery and its a short thick red one. I wonder is that fuse still intact.

P.S I don't quite understand how the glows work on these vehicles because it behaves differently from other diesel vehicles. For instance the glow light only comes on below freezing point, but I believe they still work each time the car is started ???

The attached might help with some of your questions.

thank you 🙂 do you happen to have any of the other diagrams for ANYTHING that runs on the engine looms from the PCM. sensors and such. im slowly trying to track them all down to replace the entire loom on mine someone has been in before i had it and its a mess to say the least so just making a new loom as i want it run rather than where ford place it to rub and melt away.

Just quick update.

wk'end I removed air filter housing to expose main round connector that feeds glow plugs & Injectors.Split connector and sprayed some go go juice in it.Then reconnected @ Split a few times just to scratch up the contacts.early days but no flashing Amber light on dash tonight on way home(when it has been coming on lately)early days. Also noticed the same section of wiring loom on mk7,they have change connector from a round one to square.(could this of been causing problems?)definitely worth checking if your having same issues. And just for anybody who wants to know location of Glow plug control module.see below

Hi, guys,

Do you located the glow plug relay? I have the same problem with my ford fusion 1.4 tdci In the garage on diagnostics showed PCM, glow plug circuit, and there was crowd after new year and the guy said to me to go back after a week. I'm trying to replace by myself, but I can't locate it.

I bought this one.

This is under the relay box attached to the battery on ford fusion 1.4 tdci 2009.

Moderators merge my posts. I only found this diagram online, but where is this? In the engine?

Yes.  It's beside the 12v battery in the engine bay.

Well, there besides the relay boxes attached to the battery I only found some plug and above it is the brake fluid reservoir? But this is not same shape as one on the diagram above.

Hi, guys again.
I went to a garage and they changed the glow plugs, the guy said they were all bad, but the code on the diagnostic monitor still show, glow plugs circuit.

I noticed that there only two relays in the relay box in the engine next to the battery, brown and black. Shouldn't be 4?
I don't have sunroof or winds and seat heaters.

Changed the plugs, all good now, no limp mode anymore.
