Focus mk4 - keyless entry

Featured Replies

Hi all, recently bought a 2019 mk4 focus. I've read online that there are issues with keyless entry not working when the battery charge is low. Same with stop start, which is to be expected. I can only assume that the car has sat for a little bit prior to me buying it.

Keyless entry works on the drivers side and from the boot but not the passenger side. Once I get the charge on the battery up, will keyless entry work reliably on all enabled doors? Or is it something that's intermittent and likely to be constant 'on/off' thing?

There is an update available, which I will install, but the car is currently on sync 3.4

Thanks all.

It could be that the doors are set to drivers door only.

Have a scroll through the dashboard settings and look in locks. It may be ticked to only open the drivers door. Untick that box and tick open all doors instead.

As for stop start, tbh I've not heard of any issues regarding that or low battery charge ...........honest.... @unofix.......😄

Neither have I, but I've read a lot about it though ...

I'm putting a 'Stop' to this now before things get 'Started' 🤣

On the door subject, Ford removed the keyless entry on some 2020/2021 rear doors as a cost saving exercise.

2019 ST here, keyless entry on front doors only for me 😕

I've had a look through settings:

-locks are set to all doors

-engine apparently working normally with start/stop system (can't remember exact wording)

I tried switching the settings to purely drivers do then back again, tried switching keyless off, then switched both back on. Drivers door and boot keyless entry continues to work as normal but passenger side front door still doesn't.

I don't know what's going on! 😂

I'm liking the pun 😂

Ah okay, I did wonder why some came with all four doors enabled and others only two. Mine has purely the two front doors plus the boot. The drivers door and boot works, get the front passenger does not... Surely the battery isn't that awkward?! 🤣

Don't panic. The SOC of your battery will have fell below 70%.

Put the battery on charge overnight with a good smart charger (OK @StephenFord over to you for that 😉).

After a good charge - make sure to connect the negative to the chassis earth and not the battery terminal, all will return to normal.

This is what I'm struggling with, why has the passenger door stopped working as it should ?

What else did Ford change regarding the doors apart from removing the rear door options for keyless entry, it just doesn't add up at all.

As most of you already know, ours has all four doors with the keyless entry and have never stopped working even with SOC at 50% and perhaps at a low voltage too.

Last week I checked the SOC via Forscan and it was at 68% as I posted elsewhere on here. Now yesterday I re checked it after 4 days of travel to work and back covering a mighty 14 miles altogether with having heated seats on, both front and rear heated screens on and the aircon set on 1 and it still read 68% via Forscan.

So like I said earlier, what has been changed on the Mk4 since the early 2019 ( March) Focus to cause these issues ?

As we all know the SOC of the battery these days if left at factory default can not be charged above 80%.

The BMS working together with the BCM decides what needs to be done to save power when the SOC starts to fall below 70%. So they start to turn off things that in the eyes of Ford are none essential equipment like the heated front screen in the middle of winter. Another thing to get the chop is keyless entry on the rear and front passenger doors, (of course not all cars now have keyless entry on the rear doors anymore). If the battery SOC continues to fall then at about the 50% level the keyless entry will also be disabled on the drivers door.

I have actually found it quite useful, I can check the car is locked by testing the back doors.

Can a low battery stop the heated rear screen from working as well?

Yes...

Thank you!

Keyless entry......has ya car been nicked yet?

My car is tracked and has remote shut down

I bought a couple of RFID wallets on ebay, one for each fob.  They block the key signal even if I’m stood right next to the driver’s door.

The Mk4 Focus has sleepy keys. At least all the 2019 onwards built ones should and I think you can get the early ones upgraded.

Be aware that they don't last for ever. Check on a regular basis that they are still working.

Thank you!

Right, rang the dealer to sort out some unrelated bits for the car. Was told there's an active recall out for vehicle, something to do with some sort of control module (can't recall, pun unintended, what exactly it was for).

On the subject of smart battery chargers, are there any recommendations? Completely oblivious to what's good and what's not! 😂 Having a quick look online... there are some that are different amperages. Just want something that will do the job well and not cost the Earth!
