Quick update, I stuck the partially charged cam on yesterday afternoon, then double-locked the car. Today the camera is fully charged (and has footage - of my cat sitting on the bonnet for most of the night 🙂) allowing me to retain the surveillance function I was also hoping for, but was willing to give-up.

F61 all the way in the Mk3 Focus. Thanks once more to @Copacetic, without your pictures showing me exactly where the problem was, I'd still be scrabbling with this.
