Ford B-Max 2013 not starting or cranking! Key malfunction error

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have bought an accident damaged Ford B-Max 2013 1.6 Petrol Automatic, it has light damage to the front.

The issue is the car does not start. It has the keyless fob and a start button.

When trying to start the car nothing happens, no crank, nothing! The car just keeps displaying error about key malfunction, key not detected, power steering malfunction and tyre pressure malfunction.

Have tried disconnecting battery and reconnecting, but having same issue.

The car came with one key, it does lock, unlock car. I'm thinking this could be related to the key? or is it something else?

Have checked the fuses and they look to be okay but have not tested them.

When ignition is on, all electronics work besides the climate control unit. Also the windows controls are intermittent, sometimes work, sometimes doesn't.

Please can someone help.

First, change the battery in the key fob, 2032 Panasonic or Energizer

Second, ensure the car battery is fully charged.

Third, ensure no harness has been damaged at the front end where the impact occurred.

Just because the key locks/unlocks the doors does not mean that the transponder chip in the key is programmed in to the car.

In fact, given the circumstances I'd think it highly probable that either the key is a replacement, and has not been programmed in, or that that it might not even have the transponder chip in it.

@DaveT70 @unofix Thanks guys, one thing I forgot to mention, is the TCM was damaged when I brought the car, and was getting error on computer saying 'no communication with TCM'.

I have since replaced the TCM with a second-hand one but getting the same error still.

have changed car key battery, fully charged car battery and also reprogrammed the car key and also programmed a new car key but still car not starting. still getting key malfunction error.

could it be the TCM that is preventing the car from starting?

does the TCM require coding in for it to work?

How did you programme the key ?

The transponder chip is passive and does not require a battery to work. As far as I know on a 2013 vehicle you can no longer programme the transponder back in to the vehicle yourself, this now requires a Ford dealer.

The programming of the key/keyfob to lock and unlock the doors is something that you can do yourself and it does need a battery (CR2013) in the keyfob to work.

I think I'd be investigating damaged wiring around the impact area

Thanks @unofix

A friend of myn programmed it using his diagnostic computer.

Are you sure only ford dealer can programme the transponder?

yes @DaveT70 I will investigate that next. There is a snapped wire near the winscreen washer bottle so maybe that could be causing a break in the circuit?

also how do I reply to comments, cant seem to see an option?

Up until 2010, you could programme in the transponder chip using FORScan.

However Ford changed the system for security reasons and it now requires a Ford specific dealer programming unit for newer vehicles. There are also about a half a dozen independent auto-locksmiths in the country who have the equipment.

Hi all, so you guys were right it was the harness.

Few wires were broken from the impact of accident.

Connecting the wires has resolved the issue.

All electricals now fully working and car starts!!

Thank you both for your inputs @DaveT70 @unofix
