Could it be part of a front spring?

It's a spring end cover that stops the spring squeaking against the shock plate.  Chances are it's probably just slipped out gradually over time but it's definitely worth checking that the spring end hasn't snapped off.

There won't be any issues at all not having it fitted, aside from potentially a mildly annoying noise...but not worth the £50+ you'll be charged to refit it!
