Options for adding another key ??

Featured Replies

Hi peeps,,

I’ve only one key for my 09 car,, how expensive is it get a second??

what are my options to getting one cut and programmed??

I have forscan that can apparently do it but I’m not overly confident to attempt it 🤣,, anyone done it using forscan or am I better off going to ford ??

I’m wanting a second key and not a clone just so I can add more keys if needed

thanks peeps

Ford stealers will charge you over £200, try someone like Timpsons or a mobile locksmith.

Looking at the Forscan site: https://www.forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2671#p2671

It should be quite safe to try the Ignition Key Programming option, and this can be used to verify if the key you manage to obtain is valid. The dangerous option is the Erase option, but this is only needed if there is any suspicion that the missing key may be used on your car by someone else. (Or for some cars that apparently do not support the standard programming option.)

I think it is a basic requirement to have two different keys programmed to PATS before the car will start, but it is not necessary to have both keys to use the procedure. If you have only one, the other must have been lost at some time, but if it has not been used for years, it is very unlikely to suddenly turn up in someone else's hands now.

You seem to understand the basic problem of cloned keys, which is they do not count as two keys to PATS, and I suspect Timpsons & other basic locksmiths will usually just clone a key, because they must have diagnostic access to the car to be able to programme a 2nd (or 3rd or more) PATS key.

In your position, I would feel as sick as a parrot if I was forced to go to a Ford francised dealer to be ripped off for this, and would, with some caution, try the Forscan route.

I tried Timpsons when I first got my car and wanted a 'spare'. The quote of £215 still makes me smile to this day as the guy said it with such a straight face! 🤣 The moment has passed for me now and I'm quite happy with one 'fob', and one, 'blade' key...

I asked a mobile locksmith for a quote on a second Golf key when I bought the car in 2018...  £180!! 😮

Needless to say I was just very careful with the key after that lol.  I don't even have a spare blade, just one single fob...but if I was to lose that fob then I've also lost my front door key anyway.

I'm sure it's @isetta that has experience with Forscan & keys on the Mk2.5?

When I last went for a haircut (boasting here because I still have a little left!) I wasn't given my usual discount for being an OAP and I really wasn't sure whether to feel pleased or disappointed.....
