best course of action for crack windscreen

Featured Replies

I'm unsure why everyone suddenly got fixated on MOT regs, did I miss something, is the OP getting an MOT, or just trying to get his car fixed?

thank you guys for the advice.

my mot is not due anytime soon so all i am trying to do is stop it from spreading. i have used glue/nail varnish and will check maybe tomorrow to see if it has spread.

i still need to drive my car so fingers crossed, it might have slowed the process down or hopefully stopped it for now.

the crack is in the middle bottom nearer the passenger side so not in my view at all.

If you are worried then you can buy repair kits for under £10.  I even saw one for sale in an Asda Superstore recently.

They work well for chips and can be used for small cracks and are not difficult to use, I have used them successfully myself but only for chips with small cracks.

If the crack is too big or has extended to any extremity of the screen then a repair is likely to be just very temporary but might slow things down until you are ready to get a new screen fitted.

Does your insurance cover you for a replacement car whilst yours is unusable?

If so, you may want to look into that to see if that will affect your no claims bonus or other costs

and, he's not even Scottish! LOL

The crack will keep going until it gets to the edge of the screen I reckon. But I would still drive it if I can see properly.  It won’t shatter or fall out.  Windscreen is two layers of glass, the crack is only in one of the two layers.

only problem is they cant come to me till 10th of june. i have now tried clear nail varnish to stop it spreading as i still need to drive.

That doesn't sound right - over the years I've had a few windscreen replacements and repairs - the quickest one was 9a.m one new years day, I'd range them only 8 hours before! That was for a rear window on an Astra estate. The latest was one Subday a couple of months ago, rang about a chip, Autoglass were there the next morning.

If you've got to wait until June something ain't right.

If you'd have tried some epoxy resin, I'd have more faith - trust me, that nail varnish did nothing!

Now, if I had a choice, it would be Elsie Tanner for me - couple of obvious reasons LOL

The late Pat Phoenix...

The only way to stop a crack is to drill a hole right at the end of the crack. the principal behind it is that a crack loves to spread from a sharp edge but if you change that sharp edge to a smooth circle the crack stops.

I had a crack in my screen running along the bottom just a centimetre or so above the rubber sealing bead. The boss in the coach garage where I work had a screen repair kit and did the drilling as I watched. I recognised the tool as a dentists drill for doing fillings etc. and indeed that's all it was. He said replacement drill bits were dirt cheap and he had a good supply to hand. That sort of kit is definitely not cheap when it is sold for medical use!

The crack did not spread, the car passed several MOTs and was sold as it was. It helped that the crack was just under the wiper blade in the parked position.
