Focus MK 1 Tyre Valve stem?

Featured Replies

Hi all. Does anyone know which size tyre valve stems are required for the MK 1 Twin 8 spoke alloys please? No TPMS is fitted.

Thanks.

At first, I thought this was a trick question! I've been having tires maintained since my first car in 1979, I always assumed they all used exactly the same size stem. Maybe someone can correct me if I'm talking b*llocks, not the first time!

There are different sizes of valve, particularly between steels and alloys, but tyre shops will tend to just fit a standard size.

The Mk1 alloys use a 49mm rubber valve - Genuine Ford Rubber Wheel Valve 6764791 | eBay

Mk1 RS uses metal valves - Genuine Ford Valve 5051325 | eBay

And Mk1 steels use 56mm rubber valves - Genuine Ford Rubber Wheel Valve x5 6764792 | eBay

When I read it yesterday I thought the same as Stephen Ford but didn’t say so in case I was wrong,   The I thought may be some alloy wheels are thicker where the valve hole is the metal used in alloy wheels is considerably weaker than on steel wheels.        Edit: seems Tom was typing at same moment as me.     Further edit:   I was aware there were different lengths ( the bit you can see).  But I thought maybe the question related to the bit you can’t see eg thickness of the metal of the wheel around the hole.  So do any valve stems vary according to how thick the wheel metal is around the hole?   Or are they all the same in that respect?

🤣🤣  Well it seems like we had a 'Mexican Stand Off' 🤣🤣

I saw this yesterday and like both @StephenFord and @isetta I was also thinking all valve stems have to meet the same standards. The only real difference is those on alloy wheels are shorter and those on steel wheels longer as they have to reach through the hub cap.

Of course you can get the fancy metal ones that some of the more upmarket cars like to use but again I imagined them to be the same diameter.

They do come in different lengths. I have had new Tyres fitted in the past and the Valves have sometimes been either longer or shorter than the original ones, I can't remember which way round it was.

Thanks to you all guys and gals, especially TomsFocus. A quick measure confirms 49mm looks about right. Thank you!

And thanks for that link Tom. I could not find Ford stems anywhere and the Ford dealer parts guy said they didn't have them as the service department use them when changing tyres. Which is strange I thought. Where do service get them from!
