Another MPG thread

Featured Replies

My 1.6 is currently returning 20.2 mpg according to the cluster, Ive put £30.00 in it 3 times over the last 2 weeks. I grandad drive it. It does have a very slight lump on tickover and the other day i could definately smell petrol. MAF sensor ? Evap unit if i have one and can you oint me in location direction. My mech is off to Tenerife tomoz for a week. Had a sniff today and cant smell anything petroly.

Cheers

Since the £2/liter petrol prices, I too have started driving like Miss Daisie, even doing just 60mph on a motorway, I've never done that. On my last tank I was rewarded with a 34Mpg (up from usual 30Mpg), though it's no fun, motoring has lost all enjoyment for me now which is a shame as I  use to really love it...

A very respectful 52mpg on my mild hybrid very pleased.!

At least, 'hybrids' make sense to me, full battery cars don't. I still have no idea why the government have banned them too in 2030.

65.5 for me … I thank yoou!

54.7 for June. My best month was April with 58.3

My Mondeo fuel consumption is taking a bashing with this hot weather and air con on.

I seriously expected some constructive idea's not got air con on, yet all the lookat me's fall out of the woodwork

Then take it to a garage and get it on a ramp and they will check it for leaks and anything else that could explain the smell of petrol.

I'd say stop grandad driving it for a start...  Yes it helps MPG short term, but allows everything to get mucky, clogged and seized long term.  Engines are designed to be driven, just drive normally.

And you know what's coming next...any faults on Forscan?

This hot weather will drop MPG on NA petrols.  Hot air is less dense and hot fuel doesn't atomise as well, so you're getting less bang for buck, needing to use more fuel for the same amount of work done.  Not so noticeable on turbo engines where the intercooler cools the charge air anyway.

Purge valve is shown here if you want to check that, 9D667 -

Does that also mean that I have to stop wearing my peaked cap, and shaking my fist at other drivers?? 😂

And if you're anything like my Grandad, still driving a supermini as if it's an artic, 20 years after retirement.  At least the cats-eyes got a regular cleaning.

Cheers Tom, its booked in for when he gets back, Forscan is clear, always my first port of call now i have it. It doesnt always smell of petrol just a one off. I'm in a self imposed lockdown with the heat due to various health concerns and not wanting to add to the NHS workload. I had to wear my peaked cap the otherday as i'd burnt the top of my head inside 2 hrs, took 2 days and constant anti-sun to get it to cool down.

I know that feeling.   My balance goes above about 25c.  Can't really walk around the flat safely at the moment, and can't get outside into cooler air as I can't negotiate the stairs.  Looks like we've got at least another week of this heatwave to try and get through as well.

All the shopping TV channels are swamped right now with home A/C units - maybe worth investing for you?

I bought one last year but my flat isn't big enough to use it.  I didn't realise at the time, as well as the unit itself being massive, they then need a huge ~6"dia exhaust vent to extract the hot air outside.  Rented place so can't cut holes in the wall.  And only have one small window in the main lounge/bedroom area but can't place it anywhere near that due to it's size.  Really needed to be out of here and in more suitable accommodation before summer but it didn't happen.  Just trying to manage until September now and hope I can move in the autumn, though realistically that's pretty unlikely too.  So for now it's just all about distractions...luckily Ford's keep breaking so there's always something to do on here!!

We don't really have a culture here of domestic A/C installations. Whereas in somewhere like New York, you wouldn't get an apartment without one. Maybe as 'global warming' properly kicks in, that may change in the UK!

I'd hope so.  But I don't think it's financially or logistically viable in the UK.  Properties are too small.  Energy costs too much.  I've also considered things like white roofs and heat reflective glass in windows.  Or even moving 'up North'...

It is a genuine concern of mine for the future.  Already really struggling for about a quarter of every year now due to the heat...and the idea that it's only going to hotter on average, and with more and more excess heatwaves, that's really not a fun thought.  It is one of the reasons I'm trying to do 'my bit' for climate change where possible.  I know our thoughts differ on that so that's not for this thread.

I really don't think we are that far apart. I am an avid recycler, since my council gave me a proper mechanism to do it! I also haven't bought a 'plastic' shopping bag since NI started to tax them 9 years ago! I have used recycled hessian bags for a decade. As for energy, I use the absolute minimum I can get away with now due to the horrendous cost. I know we probably disagree with cars in that you're a fan of EVs, whereas I have a fervent belief that the carbon footprint of the manufacture of them far outweighs any 'running' savings made.

So, we're both right 😃

My daughter picked up an 18" floor standing fan, fairly quiet except when in take off mode full power haha, Home Bargains i beleive.

Stephen, I've  always said green is expensive and i've yet to be proved wrongTheres a movement atmo to refund or offset the costs of those on medically required machinery.

Well it gets wierder, put £30.11 in to be precise turn ignition on and it stated 242 to empty, wento collect some bits, mixture of town and dual carriageway. Did 65.2 miles, and it now states 122 to empty. Either my maths is bad or theres deffo an issue somewhere, i dont leave it sat idling except junctions. Sat scratching my head.

You are way overthinking this. You put in just over 3 gallons. The fuel computer in your car is nowhere near as accurate as you think. Ignore it. Do a proper brim to brim test and check what your actual consumption is, not what some boffins in Ford think you might see!

Once you do a proper MPG test, then reset your odometer to zero everytime you fill up, and use that as a more accurate guide to you petrol consumption, and range to tell you how far you can go...

67.4 today ,air con on, flat out like a lizard drinking ,ohh, look at me going  on…
