Alternator or battery?

Featured Replies

Hi, Does anyone know what is wrong with my car? I have a Ford Focus 1litre ecoboost and about a week ago some red interior lights came on when I turned my car on that haven’t before. They’re in the cup holder, on the door, in the footwell and above on the ceiling. I didn’t think anything of it but then my battery went flat the day after. It’s a push button start. You can hear it trying to start but it can’t. We jump started it and it was fine for 3 days and then went dead again. I am now having to jump start it every 3 days as it keeps going flat again. I had my battery tested and it’s 450v whatever that means. It’s an enhanced flooded battery if that means anything to anyone. The people told me that it may be the alternator and not the battery and don’t want to be paying for the wrong thing for it to be the other one. Has anyone else had this problem?

thanks

Hello Katie, I think it is fair to say you don't know anything about cars. The very best recommendation I can give you is take your car to a proper legitimate garage and get it looked at by a qualified technician.

I've no idea who you have had look at your car but either they are incompetent or making fun of you.

@unofix haha yes that is true I don’t have a clue. Thanks for the advise I will just have to do that.

Lol, yes I'd broadly concur with @unofix there. Someone competent with a multimeter should be able to quickly assess if the battery is ok and is receiving charge.

Couple of thoughts though.

Could they have meant 450amps rather than 450volts?

My experience with failing batteries is that they won't hold charge for more than a few days, which sounds like the case here.

You don't mention any warning lights on the dash - you might expect to see the red battery symbol indicating a charging system fault.

Enhanced flooded battery (EFB) is a normal fit in a 1.0 ecoboost - the one on my Fiesta is as shown:

@Eric Bloodaxe hi, yes it might have been 450amps I may be confused I was being told lots of information lol.

no there isn’t any warning lights on the dash which is why they thought it may be the alternator. I’ve been and ordered a battery today so will try that and if not, try an alternator.

Thankyou for the information and advice☺️

The warning light on the dash with the picture of the 'Battery' means the alternator is not charging the battery.

If the warning light was 'on' then the alternator would most likely be faulty. There is no warning light to tell you if the battery is faulty.

Yes, as discussed on several threads this causes a lot of confusion by being a battery symbol.

The Ford Manual for a 2012 Focus says this:

"Ignition warning lamp

Ignition Warning Lamp  If it illuminates when you are driving, this indicates a malfunction. Switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment. Have the system checked by a properly trained technician immediately."

basically, all it tells you is "something is wrong" which is not that helpful. But at least the manual repeats your initial advice!😀

Most online sources of advice (This one is (appropriately) from Confused.com) say something like this:

"What does the battery warning symbol mean?

This symbol indicates that your car’s battery isn’t receiving a charge from the alternator.

This could be as a result of a problem with the alternator drive belt, for example. On some models of car, this drive belt is also responsible for the vehicle’s water pump.

If water can no longer be provided where it’s needed, you could experience an overheating engine.

Can I drive with my battery warning symbol on?

If your car has overheated, you should call for roadside assistance.

However, the battery warning symbol could just mean there’s a fault in your battery and that it needs replacing. Visit your local garage for a proper diagnosis"

which is slightly more helpful than the Ford effort.

@unofix @Eric Bloodaxe Thankyou very much that is much more helpful than the information I was given previously. Fingers crossed that it is just the battery then 🤞🏼 😊
