Mk4 Focus 1.0 Ecoboost MOT emissions

Featured Replies

Hello,

My Mk4 1.0 Ecoboost 125 Focus has almost failed the MOT emissions test twice on the bounce (car is a 68 reg so just turning 4 years old). Car has done 19k miles and full ford service history and does get longer runs to clear the GPF. Any ideas what might be causing this and has anyone else had this problem? This is the newer 1.0 Ecoboost that’s chain driven with a GPF, not the older wet belt driven one.

Many thanks!

Do you have the printout? Can you add photo of it

Well ive just learnt something new, i didnt even know that they had changed to chains, good decision though!

As previous post says, have you got the print out, and did the garage say it only just went through or are you just going by the print out? Only reason is because they may have done it without fully warming the engine.

Was not aware they had produced chain models on the ecoboost, I currently have a 1.0 ecoboost 2019 fiesta active…. That is wet belt

I am in the process of buying a 2019 1.0 ecoboost 125 Focus Vignale… how will I find out if it’s Belt or Chain ? If indeed it would have chain…. According to my checks they all use the wet belt system.

Ive just looked on autodata and it shows the hybrid as having a chain driven 1 litre ecoboost!!??? This is the first I've heard of this, now if this is the case then it shouldn't have an emissions test for MOT anyway.

So depends on if it’s the mild hybrid ?

Looks like it, im sure someone here must work at a dealership that can elaborate

Hold on i will look up the puma see what that says

Yes so the ford puma also appears to be chain 🙄

All 1.0 EcoBoost in Mk4 Focus is the new chain driven engine.

There is still a wet belt running the oil pump though.

I thought that all the Mk4 Focus cars had a Chain and a small Wet Belt for the Oil Pump.

I'm not sure about this but I thought the newer Chain engines have a small dumpy Oil Filter at the front rather than the back. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Well there you go then, although would have liked to have seen both wet belts gone

The mild hybrid is still 100% petrol engine driven.  It's not a hybrid, can be thought of more like having an additional electric turbo.

The MHEVs all use the chain driven engine.  But the non-hybrids are not so easy to determine.  Different models switched to the chain engine at different times.  The 1.1 non-EcoBoost also still uses the old twin wet belt system.

I'm sure that in 6 or 7 years it will become quite obvious which engines still have or should I say 'had' wet belts !!

It’s easy to see if you have chain driven or belt driven just looking under the bonnet.

If the turbo is at the front it is wet belt, if it’s got the turbo at the back then it is chain. Part of the engine revisions that saw a chain implemented also included reversing the head.

But as has been mentioned for OP we need to know what exactly it’s failing on. If the OP can post the results even better.

Sad but true.  I should add that you can easily tell by the lifting the bonnet.  But that's not helpful if you're searching Mk8 Fiesta's on Autotrader.

Thank you, didnt realise, thought any hybrid was exempt 👍

Unfortunately I don’t have the print out, I was just given the MOT certificate itself. I only ask because this is its 2nd MOT and on both it’s only just scraped through it’s emissions test to see if anyone else has this issue and whether there is a fix (perhaps software update) available to remedy.

It’s hard to offer any help without knowing exactly what reading was the problem.

If they did not give you a print out both times I would take it somewhere else next year. I have never not had a print out.

I’ve been given a printout for years. Sometimes it’s been printed on the back of the mot certificate

That does not need 6 or 7 Years.

Failure of the oil pump wetbelt of the 2nd generation 1.0 ECOboost engine becomes quite common these days. I have seen several examples been mentioned on other forums lately. Most of them suffer from stripped teeth.

From what I have seen most engines seem to be repairable as long as the engine is directly switched off once the oil pressure light starts blinking.

Replacing the oil pump wetbelt on these engines is a massive job since the sump and engine (timing) cover needs to be removed. Basically the same amount of work as replacing the wetbelts on a 1st generation 1.0 ECOboost engine.

I don't think we've seen a single one on this forum so far!

Are the other forums UK based or abroad?  Not that location should make much difference really.
