Removing the air con pump and system

Featured Replies

Hi

Have a Mondeo 2000 with not working air con system. Would like to use on a different project and I think it will be just an electrical fault

First off; Can I remove the pump (where ever it is) and run the engine with out the pump connected or is it part of a group of other parts running off of same belt?

Thanks

    I would of thought it would be cheaper and easier to get an AC pump from your local scrap yard. Probably pick one up for £20 and then you wont have the issue of releasing the gas into the atmosphere,

  • Have you lifted the bonnet?

  • I think the belt from house of Fraser is the best bet as that can at least be adjusted to any length, if cost is an issue you should be able to get one from Primark but then quality could be an issue.

Don’t know about yours. On my 2015 fiesta the aircon pump jammed and snapped the belt. So I bought the shorter belt from the same engine type but without aircon so the belt no longer goes round that pulley.  I looked at pics of 2nd hand engines on eBay to see what they looked like with and without aircon to check everything else is in same place.

Which size engine is it?  Petrol or diesel?

There aren't many AC pumps that are run on a solo belt so I would expect, as above, to run a shorter belt and possibly change the belt routing.

So you removed the air con pump and fitted a shorter belt and it all worked

Witch pully was it on so I know what belt to look for

Also did you manage to degas the thing?

According to the log book its

2001 Mondeo LX, 4 door saloon, 1798cc petrol, if that helps

Ok thanks, so it's a Mk3? There's one long single belt run on these.  Waterpump and PAS pump as well as AC pump and alternator.  ACC, bottom right, is the AC compressor.

Looks like you could probably get away with a belt straight from the PAS pulley to the crank pulley but you'd have to check that on the car as these might not be perfectly to scale.

I didn’t remove my aircon pump, it’s still on the car , it just doesn’t have any belt to the pulley. The shorter belt bypasses the aircon pump. The pump is jammed. I was thinking about buying a 2nd hand on eBay and fitting it but I was put of by the problem of degassing my aircon system. As far as I know it’s still full of gas to the right pressure. Potentially hazardous (and illegal to release into the air as far as I know).

Thanks for the diagram! It kind of makes sense, but to clarify first

ALT= Altenator

TENS= tensioner (the bit where you pull its pulley to tighten the belt then lock it all up with a socket/ spanner tightening its bolt)

PUL= Pulley (not sure of its real purpose, but keeps the whole thing in tact)

WP= Water pump

CRANKSHAFT= from the engine which drive the belt and hence the system

ACC= Air conditioning system compressor

PS= Pas pump? I am unsure?

I'm intrigued to what project you want the pump for. I was thinking of using one for a fridge on my boat, years ago, but never got around to it.

PS = Power Steering

PAS = Power Assisted Steering

They are one and the same thing.

The guide pulley holds extra tension on a long belt run.  Main purpose is to increase the amount of belt driving the pulley.  More belt on the pulley means more efficient energy transfer from the belt to the pulley and stops the belt slipping.

Great thanks! think I have cracked this one so far

As I do not have a workshop manual; Next question is where on the engine should I find the pully system

You should really purchase a Haynes manual if you're going to embark on working on your mk3. There you will find pictures of the major components, a picture is worth a thousand words, remember. But not just pics, maintenance and servicing  procedures, torque settings, wiring diagrams,  it's by no means perfect, but indispensable if you're going to keep, and maintain your own car. Also  youtube is worth a glance.

The engine is at the front of the car, that's the opposite end from the boot. The pulley things are at the other end of the engine from the box with all the cogs in.

Nar I'm selling it as dont require / wont it any more or even like it?

Have bough a 1971 Morris Marina that I am going to be more into when I pick it up next week, but in the mean time was asked before why I want the pump and its to make a cellar cooling system. Since when I bought the car it did not work; guess it would make no odds removing it

Morris Marina, that should be fun, something that rusts more than a Ford.

I had a look and there dose not appear to be a pully system on gear box N/S. Only on D/S. But its very hard to see anything in there though

But I cant see there being a need for another pully system as it would appear everything needed is on the one pully

where would I get the belt from; how much should it cost?

Not knowing your size it's difficult to be exact but this is a reversible belt and reduced from £250 to £199

250 quid for a belt that is ridiculess! but I could always use the buckeler if the tensoner brakes

I still can't tell if this is a wind up... :unsure:

The easiest way to measure a shorter belt run for a non standard aux belt is to use a piece of string around the pulleys in the correct order.

Poly V belt codes are easy to decipher.  The first number is the ribs on the pulley.  The second number is the length in millimetres.

So if you've got 4 ribs on the pulley, and the string is 965mm long, you'd need a 4PK965.

That's just an example.  No one on here will know the length, you will have to measure it yourself as suggested above.
