Removing the air con pump and system

I got the belt back onto today in the end. Not started car or put back on plastic cover or wheel yet but since as I can see the dryer, is it worth robbing that off or not bother?

I'd say not bother.  If you don't know that the system is empty it's actually illegal to just open the pipework...as well as pretty dangerous if refrigerant hits your skin or eyes.

Pub cellar chiller sounds like a much better idea to pursue!

I would of thought it would be cheaper and easier to get an AC pump from your local scrap yard. Probably pick one up for £20 and then you wont have the issue of releasing the gas into the atmosphere,

  • Have you lifted the bonnet?

  • I think the belt from house of Fraser is the best bet as that can at least be adjusted to any length, if cost is an issue you should be able to get one from Primark but then quality could be an issue.

I once removed a 1970/ 80 caravan fridge from a caravan and the coolant pipe burst. It was very toxic and I ran like buger! But these days the gases in them are fairly safe

As I said before I have the cellar chiller (the cold heat exchange) but just need to out side hot heat exchange to make the system complete

Depends on your idea of safe I guess.  It's not immediately perilous but will still cause freezer burn on hands & eyes if you're accidentally in the pressurised gas stream.  Can also cause drowsiness & dizziness etc in a confined space.  If you pass out from it, there's then a risk of longer term consequences.

I broke up a knackered ~80s caravan about 10 years ago and was surprised by the fridge in it.  Worked by burning propane gas!  Refrigerant was mostly ammonia which was probably the toxic gas you had to run from!

Why don't you source the external part of a cellar chiller?  That's got to be far more suitable for this than using car parts.

You know I did go on the refrigeration engineers forum

http://refrigeration-engineer.com/forums/forum.php

I asked the question about my set up and was told the usual BS its very dangerous for you to do(top two rules of sales, time and fear) You need to call out an engineer. I said well you are all refrigeration engineers, who will do it for me then. And no one replied!

On the unit there is a sticker with written on it "ACME asset number 048024 call 01254-277933". So I called the number and was told you need to have an account with us before we even talk to you, I said f@@k off then! and hang the phone up

To be honest I dont think degassing them out side is going to cause anyone any bother, specilly if no one is there!

Surly the ones that where one the ship would of cost more then the 20 quid asking price and therefore a more profesanal quality

That was just an example of a second hand one that was cheap and local to your area.

Don't think I could trust anything from the ACME corp after watching too many Looney Tunes.
