I would of thought it would be cheaper and easier to get an AC pump from your local scrap yard. Probably pick one up for £20 and then you wont have the issue of releasing the gas into the atmosphere,

  • Have you lifted the bonnet?

  • I think the belt from house of Fraser is the best bet as that can at least be adjusted to any length, if cost is an issue you should be able to get one from Primark but then quality could be an issue.

I went to the car to attempt to remove the 15mm bold in the middle of the tensioner, but I cant even fit a 3/8" drive socket in there

A spanner might be more suitable where access is limited.

I can't see what type of tensioner that is on the picture.  If it's a sprung tensioner you just need to 'push' it a few degrees away from the belt, the centre nut won't come off.

Watch this YouTube video.... there may be a few more if you have a browse.

Interesting video!
I see he dose it from the side or under and not from the top. Also to note to slacken the tensioner he turns it clockwise as where tightening

I did not have a bar to put over the spanner to make a brakers bar at the time. But since watching the above video I was turning it the wrong way anyway

Had another go at it. This time turning spanner clockwise and having friend remove belt. Note I did not take it off as instructed in the video above

 So I bought the shorter

Are you sure there is a shorter belt size sold for this car? because I went to the motor factor shop and the only one he had and the only one they sold was the same size as mine. I also went to another motor factor shop and was told the same thing! he said the only way to do it is you tell me the size you need (which would be very difficult to work out indeed)

There is not a shorter belt on the shelf for your car.

I've already explained how to measure the new run around the pulleys using string.

The easiest way to measure a shorter belt run for a non standard aux belt is to use a piece of string around the pulleys in the correct order.

Poly V belt codes are easy to decipher.  The first number is the ribs on the pulley.  The second number is the length in millimetres.

So if you've got 4 ribs on the pulley, and the string is 965mm long, you'd need a 4PK965.

That looks like quit difficult getting the exact millimetre

It doesn't have to be exactly perfect, the tensioner will take up a few mm slack.  Just make sure it's a few mm too long rather than too short.

do they do the belts in every mm size or are they rounded off to something like 5mm?

It dose not work!

The allinment of the above diagram must be out!

That's a shame.

I wonder if you could totally re-route the belt somehow.  Bot more complicated than just bypassing the AC compressor though.

To answer the question on lengths, belts will be stocked in standard manufacturers specified lengths.  But as there are 30+ years worth of cars with many different auxillary setups to chose from, you can usually find a belt length close enough to what you need.

Hi

Have a Mondeo 2000 with not working air con system. Would like to use on a different project and I think it will be just an electrical fault

First off; Can I remove the pump (where ever it is) and run the engine with out the pump connected or is it part of a group of other parts running off of same belt?

Thanks

Don’t know about yours. On my 2015 fiesta the aircon pump jammed and snapped the belt. So I bought the shorter belt from the same engine type but without aircon so the belt no longer goes round that pulley.  I looked at pics of 2nd hand engines on eBay to see what they looked like with and without aircon to check everything else is in same place.

Would need to see a proper image layout of the pully system on hear for everyone to see

Looked on google images and cant find anything. camera no good cant get half decent photos with engine inside engine bay

I'm still not totally sure which engine is in your car.  2000 1.8 petrol gives a few options.

Can you be any more specific?  Is it definitely a Mk2 2000 model?  Not a Mk3?

The problem is they also moved the PAS pump for some non-AC engines, which may explain why you can't just bypass the AC pump.

The diagram came from the Gates online catalogue of you want to look there yourself.

Just to give you some idea with this screenshot, there are at least 3 different setups shown for just one 1.8 Mondeo engine...and they may still all be wrong.  Really need to know exactly which engine it is.

Wikipedia states that mk2 started in the year 2000. Prior to that was the MK1 with the square mesh. So im sure its an MK2

The engine cover says "Dura-tec HE"

PS reg no is Y802 JKW

Don't take too much notice of Wikipedia Mk's, the rest of the world uses a different numbering system.

I've checked properly and it's a Mk3.  It was also built in 2001, not 2000.  Engine code should be CHBA or CHBB.  They all had AC as far as I can tell.

The above diagram is correct in sequence, but as you say, not to scale.

From a quick ebay search I've found this pic showing the actual layout.  There are probably more on there at better angles if you've got time to look yourself.

Yes that line up looks about right. But as you can see if you bypass the AC pump then the belt from the PS pump will touch with the water pump belt

Yeah, after all that, it doesn't look possible to totally re-route the belt and still get a good contact patch on every other pulley either.  Looks like we're at a dead end here. 🤦‍♂️

You could buy a used AC compressor on eBay for your project instead.
