VED

Featured Replies

I see in the media today howls of indignation about this, and cries that it will deter people from making the switch to electric. This is more because of the effect of the Expensive Car Supplement which will hit EVs, as the current average price of a new EV is £43k apparently.

Perhaps the tax might encourage production of more EVs at prices the average person could possibly afford, which I suspect is one of the main reasons everyone is not rushing to plug in at the moment.

On the same sort of theme the i newspaper reports today that the average cost of running an electric car over the course of its life is £3,752 per year, compared to £3,858 for a petrol/diesel. Not clear where they got those figures, though if correct they're not going to get people rushing to their EV showroom to save £106pa.

is it a chancellor issue or is it a dept of transport problem, surely one makes the rules the other writes the cheques.

I see with relish VED on EV cars will no longer be zero, well 2025. ALL and i mean ALL road users even cyclist should contribute to the upkeep of the network. Why should us gas guzzlers finance the rest.

I have had a few "conversations" while out cycling with so-called drivers over this - usually after they've been "inconvenienced" by my presence delaying them, then pulling in front for a "conversation" (aka Whinge) which delays them even more.

Most memorable was pedalling up a hill towards my home, past a continuous line of parked cars, being tailgated by a guy gunning his engine in annoyance. So I signalled right and pulled into a driveway (my own!). Car stops in middle of road, driver starts effing and blinding about getting in his way, about cyclists in general, should pay road tax etc. So I politely(yes, politely!) pointed out to him that

a) the road was maintained by the local council, and

b) I paid council tax on the nearby house and

c) I paid road tax on both cars in its driveway and

d) Swearing at me was not very civil, especially with two elderly ladies in the back of his car and

e) There was a line of traffic behind him that hadn't been there when he first stopped, and that he was holding up and

f) Have a nice day sir!

haven't yet had anyone pull up while I'm out walking and tell me I should pay shoe tax 'cos I'm using the road .....

I can't find it on the gov website but all the other sites are saying that it's only electric cars registered after April 1st 2017 that will lose their zero rate exemption.

Probably because any older than that and the car's are already on the way to the great battery recycling centre in the sky 😉

That's correct . Prior to that date electric vehicles will go up a tax band to £20 a year

Thanks for that. That will apply to us (PHEV registered 2015).

Still can't find it on a "gov.uk" search though!

As far as I can tell my fiesta diesel is going from zero to twenty quid but I can’t see anywhere that says when it applies from. Not that it really matters as it’s still dirt cheap.  My wife’s car is 30 quid. That 30 quid band hasn’t changed for at least 14 years.  When I started driving all VED went up in every budget without fail.  Suits me if they don’t go up but it surprises me.

All our 3 cars are zero at the moment. Fiesta1.0 ecoboom , peugeot 108, and my milk float.

Are all the 2001-2017 bands increasing or just the free band?

Currently my 2.0 TDI Golf is £30.

1.6 TDCi Focus is £30.

1.0 hybrid Focus is £155. (Post 2017)

Just the free band I'm led to believe.

wait and see what it says on your reminder

Why bring cyclists into this ? Even if cyclists paid any such tax don you think the average idiot motorist will treat them with respect ? Like hell they will 🤬 car drivers will always endanger their lives.

Some six years ago I got knocked off my bike by a car driver and was assaulted by the driver, his reason for this was because he couldn't get by instantly and he spouted ***** about the same......GET OFF THE ROADS AS I DON'T PAY ROAD TAX........This IDIOT was driving an all electric Nissan Leaf.......Dumb f*ucker.

I'd like to see how a kid going to school on his bike should be taxed, there's enough hatred against cyclist in the UK I feel like wanting to upstakes and go and live in the Netherlands.

Indeed. It's not as if VED actually gets exclusively spent on roads anyway, it just ends up in the tax pot.

Probably very few cyclists who don't own another vehicle on which they pay VED anyway.

Places like the Netherlands and others in Europe do seem to have a more intelligent approach though, there's more acceptance that different types of road users don't really mix that well, so far more dedicated cycling routes away from other traffic. The approach here is all too often to "steal" some road space, or half the pavement, paint the odd white line, and call it a cycle lane!😀

The underlying problem though, is human nature. Most of us are pretty reasonable, unfortunately a minority are just complete pill*cks whether they're driving a car, cycling, or even just walking across the road without looking!😀

i didnt want this to degenerate into a i hate cyclists as i dont, some ride safely others are animals that dont give a flying F. if a nominal fee was levied or they at a minimum had to have some form of insurance to be in the road it would even the playing feild.

Absolutely this.  In so many areas of life!!

The problem with cyclists isn't the lack of VED, it's the lack of registration number.

They know they can't be identified and held responsible for endangering pedestrians so continue to do it.  Riding on the pavement, riding on the wrong side of a 'shared' foot & cycle path, and racing around road junctions without any consideration for pedestrians crossing side roads.

Personally, I'd have dog walkers registered as well, the amount of dogs that are out of control on the pavement here is ridiculous.  People go on about having to 'share' roads and paths, but how can it be shared when certain groups terrorise others with maniacal cycling and unrestrained dogs?

With you there. Not got a cycle at present, but always made sure I had some form of 3rd party liability cover, as I'm sure most responsible people do. It's how to enforce it for the irresponsible ones that would be a problem I guess, without adding loads of bureaucracy, and we have quite enough as it is.

Going off topic somewhat, but I've had a strange day involving people behaving irresponsibly. This morning I was nearly knocked down twice while walking on the pavement within a couple of yards. One was someone doing a 3 point turn who thought it was ok to go over the pavement as well. Seconds later another car turned into a driveway just missing me (actually clipped me with the mirror).

This afternoon we set off up the Dales to shut up the caravan for the winter. Nearly hit head on twice by people overtaking on double white lines. Then, a few yards from our destination, a Nissan Leaf of all things pulled straight out of a side road in front of us without looking. Certainly given the brakes some use today!😠

With how your day has gone, I'd get some lotto numbers on 😆

I've had cycle insurance since 1983, its not to cover me if I was a lousy cyclist but incase some lousy car driver decides to try and kill me, cycle insurance is voluntary but to any outsider car driver/s they will think straight away, ''look at these arseholes on bikes who has no insurance 🤬''

You'd be very surprised at this but I reckon 90 odd % of these loons on bikes do indeed have insurance.

If you have home contents insurance it normally includes personal liability for your whole family who live with you and I think that includes liability from cycling so I think a lot of cyclist have the cover and don’t even know they’ve got.  I reckon a lot of people who buy home contents cover would have no idea about the liability cover usually included.  Of course different policies vary so don’t assume what I say applies 100%

Perhaps in big cities where cycling is extremely common, and where cycle lanes are provided (signifying the amount of cycle traffic they expect). Certainly not the case in more rural areas I'd bet. The amount of clowns on bikes here is astronomical, don't get me wrong there are considerate ones too. Last night there was a guy on the main road dressed in black, on a black bike cycling toward incoming cars with no lights. Jed be better off with life insurance rather than bike insurance lol.

P.s. I don't expect cyclists to use cycle lanes, nor do I have a problem with cyclists who ride safely and to the rules of the HC.
