Hi there all ,

New member of your community as of today putting out a question to anyone who may know what is going on with my engine at idle 

Since we have had the extreme heat and cold snaps this year as of 3 days ago my engine has been making a grinding slipping noise at idle as well as when driving it is sporadic  .

No obvious leaks oil levels fine coolant levels fine as well 

Will upload video of Noise after trimming video length down

Unfortunately the sound on the video is not very clear, but I would say it's going to be something driven off the aux belt.

(a) Water pump

(b) power steering pump

(c) alternator pully

(d) Air conditioning compressor

 

What engine / gearbox?  Does it change sound if you hold your foot down on the clutch?

It's a 1.6L Duratec petrol engine , Manual transmission

I had the timing belt changed a while back at around 90k miles and sure water pump was done at same time so hoping it is not to do with that but may be b,c,d as stated above they have never been changed 

And it makes the grinding noise while idling  and stationary when you pull away no noise initially  after changing gear and the grinding noise resumes does not seem to matter when changing gear or not . 

Noises resumes after changing gear  but once you do change gear from 1st to 2nd  noise goes away then resumes 2nd to 3rd noise goes away and then resumes and so on 

Just cruising in 4th or 5th no gear changes get sporadic grinding slipping noises again seems totally random 

I'm not driving it until mechanic looks at it but wanted to get an idea of possible causes . Any idea cost to replace b,c,d plus aux belt as was stated above ??

Apologies to dig up this old thread, I have a MK8 (I thnk!) 2019 Fiesta Ecoboost 1.0 manual  that has started doing the the same thing. Did you get a solution to your problem?

To recap, on my car, when the engine is started there is a distinct grinding/groaning noise when idling.  If you depress the clutch, the noise goes away, which to me points at a clutch or gearbox issue.   When I then pull away you can here a louder grinding noise when accelerating and the same when changing down.

Hoping somebody can help identify the issue.
