Focus MK2 Fluid Leak

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My 2007 focus MK2 has a brake fluid leak. It must only be small as the low fluid light came on in November and I topped it up. It was fine again for a few months but has come up again. I obviously don't want to mess around with breaks so have got it booked into a garage next week. However I thought I would do a visual check to see if I could see where the leak was (and hopefully save a bit of time for the garage) but I can't see any obvious drips or leakage anywhere (at least anywhere easily accessible).

But when I opened the bonnet there did seem to be a small leak on one of the connectors. I don't think this has anything to do with the brake fluid but is someone able to enlighten me please. It's quite hard to see in the pictures but I can assure you the connector was wet with an oily substance. I have included some pictures of where it is and then some close ups.

Thanks in advance.

That's the Air Con pressure switch.

If there’s an absence of visual signs that there is brake fluid leaking are all the pads and discs ok for wear?

Brake fluid level will drop as pads/discs wear, or a rare occurrence I think pad material can get debonded from backing plates giving similar condition.

Thanks for the replies.

@TomsFocusis that something that is likely to leak an oily substance or do you think it will have come from something else (cant see what as there is nothing near it)?

@troy45pads and discs look fine but I will check again.

Yes.  There is oil mixed into the air con gas to keep the pump lubricated.  There's a seal inside the switch that's probably failed.  It's an easy one to unplug, just has a little tab on the right hand side (as pictured).  If you unplug it you should be able to confirm whether there's oil inside the plug.

As for your brake fluid leak.  The clutch uses the same fluid on these and there's a chance the slave cylinder is weeping.  I'd have a look underneath the gearbox, to see if you can see fluid seeping out between the engine and gearbox.  If not, then I suspect a leaking brake drum cylinder.
