Mk4 Service intervals (sorry)

OK, after much persistance the 'service' is now showing on the Pass app, hooray! It looks like they only changed the oil but as the car was under 6k miles that will do for me, I was more bothered that the service record might have been incomplete.

Think the way forward is to have a main dealer service every two years as the schedule demands but have the oil changed every year in between too as good measure.

Thanks for all your replies 🙂

I couldn't believe that I waited 2 years for an oil change, from new, my previous car I changed the oil and filter every year and I do low mileage, I think with fully synthetic motor oil, that it might not be necessary to have an oil change every year?

Yuo could be right Mark but for piece of mind I'll be making sure it has fesh oil every year.

One other thing I noticed was that Ford state to replace the brake fluid every two years but that comes under the "extended service" schedule whatever that is? Does that mean it needs doing from two years old or every two yearts from some point in the future?

The garage said the brake fluid should be changed at 1st main service/ 2 years, it was at extra cost around £40 ish, I could feel the difference and the brake pedal, it did seem firmer, previous cars I never did the brake fluid.

Well this is interesting.  I've just had the 'service due' email from the local dealership.

A year ago I had this, and had to query them stating that it 'must be serviced every 12 months for warranty'.  This year, they have sent out exactly the same email, again stating that it must be serviced every 12 months for warranty.

Makes me wonder how many owners on 2 yearly servicing have been conned by this email.  It's obviously been sent out for more than a year, even after having specifically told them that it is misleading! 😠

I bought a Focus 4.5 ST X in September 23 from dealer, 6 month old demonstrater with 10k on the clock, registered Feb 23. They immediately sent me an email to get a service. I contacted them to say they had presumably mixed up my old car, which was due a service and was traded in, with the new one. They said they would re set my records.

I now get the email and text messages saying a service is needed, but the app and all the info says 2 years or 18k miles. Although it was a high ish mileage for a 6 month old car, we don't do a lot of miles as retired, so it will even out. The app currently shows an estimate of next Jan 2025 for the service due date oil life remaining 33%.

Confused.

In terms of manufacturers warranty, the car only needs to have a scheduled service within every 2 years or 18,000 miles.

I wouldn't rely on, or trust, the dealership to tell you when it needs a service.  It will be interesting to see if I get another service reminder email myself this year, as I sold that car several months ago.  I had to block their number to stop the frequent texts.

Your car is a bit of an unusual scenario with it being bought on very high mileage for 6 months old.  That sounds more like a courtesy car than an ex-demo to me but obviously can't prove that either way.  I think I would have pushed for an oil change to be completed before handover if it's potentially done a lot of idling and short drives for demonstration.  As you will now only be doing low mileage, I would personally have an oil change done now for peace of mind.  That is my own personal preference though, it is not required for warranty purposes.

Last night I had the charging system failure warning light. I had just gone to the local supermarket so was able to get home OK. I ried switon and off a few times but the warning was still there. This morning phoned my nearest service agent, as I didn't want to risk driving far, to see if they would check it for me, but they couldn't give me an appointment for a week, but suggested I call Ford assistance as the car is just within 12 months. I did and the AA came, started up the car, no warning lights or issues. Checked it out, showed no faults. If it happens again I will take a picture.

I might book for a service now, and that should extend the Ford assistance for another year and give me a bit of peace of mind.

If you got a warning light, it will have logged a fault. The AA probably have a generic reader that can't read all the faults. I'd ask the dealer to check while it's in for service, they'll be able to see what fault the charging system logged (assuming AA didn't clear all DTCs).

I decided to book the car in for a service which was due today. The dealer phoned me yesterday and said it wasn't due yet for a service as it isn't up to 18k miles and is only 1 year old, so suggested I still go for.a vehicle health check and they would check on the charge system. Even though they had been sending me texts and emails for weeks informing me I needed to book a service.

I dropped it off rhis morning and turned up at 4pm to see where it was up,to. As the car was parked outside, I guessed it was done. They said it just needed a vac and wash, which I wasn't bothered about as the weather was dreadful, but I went to get a brew and wait, then they said, they had replaced the sync module and it was just updating and they might need to keep it overnight. I asked for a curtesy car as I live 30 miles from the dealer, but they hadn't got one spare. Then they said it could be OK in 20 minutes or so, so I sat back down to wait and hope.

It was sorted and ready to go, but I was advised to keep an eye on the Sync system and to go back if I had any more issues. They than tried to charge me for the sync module and a full service, which they had apparently done and which they said wasn't needed. I said the sync module should be a warranty repair and the car didn't need a full service according to them.

After consulting the service manager I got charged £99 which I was quoted for the health check, so reasonably happy. Hopefully this will resolve any issues with charging. It seemed to drive better on the way home anyway.

The placebo effect I'm afraid.

I would like to think thar a car would generally feel slightly better to drive after a full service than before.

Indeed. My point exactly, the placebo effect.

If in fact they actually did a "Full Service" then changing the oil and filter (which is all that is done) is not likely to have made a 2023 run better. The thing is it made you feel better so probably worth the £99
