Display reads brakes applied engine power reduced

Featured Replies

2017 fiesta 1:5 diesel. Every time the foot brake is applied the above message comes onto screen. Looked on forums which suggest could be handbrake on or seized. Checked it all ok. Another suggestion was catching foot on accelerator when depressing footbrake checked all ok. Any other suggestions please .

Might seem a silly question but it needs to be asked.

You are applying the foot brake with your Right foot ?

As above.

If your vehicle has the drivers assist option, the brake is applied or active whenever there is another vehicle too close to yours while driving. This is part of the pre-collision assist with AEB or automatic braking. Although the drivers assist can not be deactivated, the AEB can. Enter the vehicle settings and locate the drivers assist option then uncheck the AEB option.

That wouldn't trigger the message the OP is having. You'd get a pre-collision assist warning.

OP's message only comes up when the car detects that the footbrake is being applied (by the driver) and they are pressing on the accelerator.

It's possible that there is a fault with the throttle pedal and it's not fully releasing or registering an incorrect input.

As Alex has explained above this is not the cause of the OP's issue.

I believe you are in North America and the specifications and behavior of your vehicles often differs considerably to those in Europe and especially the UK. Just as an example, I expect that most Fords in the US come with drive away locking active as standard and can be disabled in the instrument cluster. Here in the UK, drive away locking is not available and can not be selected by the driver. It is something that can be made available using FORScan but a Ford main dealer is not allowed to turn the function on by Ford.

It is always difficult to know how specific country specifications  can affect what options may or may not be available on a particular model.

Did you manage to cure this problem, I've changed discs and pads front and rear and was fine before I did this but now have same problem when braking

Check for seized caliper or handbrake mechanism

Both cables and calipers all good, just changed drivers rear sensor as reading lower when braking but no difference, going to change rear hub and bearing next, fingers crossed

Hub changed still the same, next push calipers all way out and check if clean

Caliper piston seems ok, now thinking brake position sensor under pedal although nothing showed when plugged into diagnostics

I've got the same issue, "brake applied power reduced" when i apply the brake. Had my rear discs and pads changed earlier in the year and hoped that would fix it but I'm still getting the message. I've seen changing the accelerator pedal to work in another forum so i have ordered one, hope it works.

Fitted the pedal and it seems to have rectified the problem as i did not get the message throughout the drive. Previously the message would appear as little as a couple of minutes into the drive when applying the brake, hopefully this is the end to the problem.

If you have this problem maybe give this ago, as it is easy and cheap to do.

Well if it remains fixed and all is good, I think this will be a very useful bit of information as the problem has come up on the forum a few times but no one has ever come back with an answer.

Thanks for the update  👍

Followed JOE00 suggestion 👍, ordered new accelerator pedal (Be careful as you need the right model for your car) from EBAY for £17, fitted and all working😀 , The warning was coming on when the brake was applied, I guess the transducer in the accelerator pedal was not returning to zero when pedal released, and therefore the computer thought both pedals were being pressed at the same time
