Rear washer jet not working

Featured Replies

Afternoon All, rear washer jet on '17 Galaxy seems to have stopped working, wiper fine and front washers okay but when pushing stalk for rear wash, nothing happens. Can hear the pump going but no water makes its way to the rear. Are there ant likely points of failure here I could check? I've had previous cars where sometimes just a little rubber hose had popped off somewhere and needed reattached? Any thoughts most welcome!

Sandy

Check in the head lining near the tailgate, about 200mm back from the opening you will probably find a small non-return valve in the pipe. They quite often fail. You can either replace it or just do away with it.

Many thanks unofix - is there any recommended/'textbook' way of getting into that headlining area to have a vague chance of getting it back in place again afterwards?!

Cheers.

Just ease the rubber tailgate weather seal off, it just pulls. You will be able to move the headlining down enough to get your hand in and reach the little valve without having to move much.

We hav 16 Galaxy. Rear washer not working. Front is fine. When u active the washer. There is no sound.

we hav been told it’s one motor that supplies both front and rear wash water.

So we don’t understand why front is fine. But back nothing happens. No water cums out any where underneath.
Is it possible it’s a wire off or a fuse just to the back.

ur help wil b very much appreciated 👍🏼

If there's no sound that is a little bit different from the issue I had (you could hear the pump trying to move things along but just nothing at the jet) however, bizarrely, ours seems to be partly correlated with how full the washer reservoir is. If it's full to the brim the front and rear work fine but if it's a bit depleted, the front is still fine but rear stops?! Very odd - don't know if the two lines perhaps exit at different heights in the reservoir or something but might be worth trying filling up to the max and then giving it a few seconds of pumping time to get fluid along what is quite a long line presumably and see if that happens to make any difference.

Thanks very much for the topping up info. I’ve done that now. And tried several long holding times to get the water tho to the jet.
Unfortunately this has not worked for us. The wiper works as it should do. But no water anywhere other that the front washers. 😵‍💫

Hi, the problem can only be one of two things, either a faulty wiper/washer stalk or a fault with the Body Control Module (BCM).

The screen wash pump is the same one with the exact same wiring for the front as it is for the back. When you press the stalk to operate the pump it sends a signal to the BCM to operate either the front or the back. The BCM controls the supply to the washer motor and either sends a positive/negative supply to make the pump run clockwise and wash the front screen or it sends a negative/positive supply to make the pump run anti-clockwise and wash the rear screen.

On a  2016 model I'd hope that the fault was not with the BCM and that you probably need a new wiper/screen wash stalk (about £35).

With a multimeter you could measure the input signals to the BCM from the stalk to see if it receives a signal to operate the pump for the rear windows, but it is quite difficult to get at the connections.

I just had the same issue and managed to resolve it without buying a replacement.

I followed what others had said to remove the valve and I kept the short length of pipe connected to metal side of the valve for the next step.

I decided to try and release the inner stuck diaphragm whilst sucking the tube which would be connected to the jet. To reduce the chance of damaging the diaphragm I found that the long metal nozzle used for inflating a football, slid inside the plastic side of the valve and after gently and repeatedly pushing the diaphragm, it finally released.

tested before putting all the lining back and now it is working.

My 2019 Galaxy is more trouble than the wife, but I love her so. Rear washer has no fluid getting to the screen. Motor spins, and fronts work fine. Had the pump out and checked for gunge, clean as a whistle. Put a hose pipe on the rear tube at the pump end to push water through the line, nothing came out other end. So the non return valve is the suspect but cannot find it anywhere, not close to the rear screen nozzle, not in the head lining. By the way I looked for wet carpets etc but nothing, no puddles underneath car either.

Can you put a syringe on the pipe to give a lot of pressure (and alternate with suction to try to move the valve/blockage) in case there's a blockage BUT if, as others say there's a non-return valve, it must have been moved so needing to be found...somewhere, but where?

if that blows off the valve, you'll see where the leak is! (I can't be responsible for that risk 😉)
I believe proper screenwash has a biocide in it that prevents build up and is a critical part i.e. don't just use water/detergent etc MUST use the proper stuff to avoid problems?

Just to add in case it’s not covered here if the fronts are working and you can hear the washer motor, but not the rear, check fuse 28 in the engine fuse box.

that solved my issue!
