2020 Mk4 Focus - bonnet popped onto latch whilst driving in

Driving in town, sub 20mph, unusual bang noise up front as the bonnet released to the first stop and the "Bonnet Open" warning appeared on the dash.

Stopped car, fully released the bonnet, opened it, shut, seemed OK, released it again, closed it - still OK

Last time the bonnet was opened was when the car was MOT'd the week before.

Hopefully this was a one off, but can any one advise me on how to ensure that it remains just a one off? Is there anything specific I should check/lubricate/not lubricate?

I suspect the aerodynamic forces on a bonnet are a bit stronger driving into a 20mph wind on the motorway.

It does sound as though it simply wasn't latched properly the last time it was closed. It probably wasn't dropped from high enough.

The Latch should be lubricated regularly with oil rather than something like WD40.

The Bonnet should close properly if you drop it for the last 10 to 14 inches, if it doesn't then wind back the rubber Bump Stops a little at a time until it does and the Bonnet is sitting at the right level in relation to the surrounding bodywork.

Thanks for the replies.

I think this might be down to the MOT guy being a bit kind when closing the bonnet (i was watching from the viewing area because I had nothing better to do) - I usually drop a bonnet onto the catch from at least 6 inches and listen for positive clunk.

@VFR800Yup - never been there but I've seen Watchdog on BBC1 🙂

They can't show things like that on the BBC it's considered to extreme and right wing 🙄

Ford have been working hard in the last ten years to make the bonnet catches more Woke so they can be Broke 🤣
