Steering issue

Good afternoon

Hope you guys can help as Google is not my friend.

I have a Focus 1.0 Ecoboost 2018 with over 50,000 miles. Twice this year the steering felt odd (like one well turning more than the other wheel) and engine going into limp mode. After turning the engine off and on again it works OK. On both occasions I was traveling slowly in an urban area, so could just pull over.

I checked fault codes and the following three came up:

B1477:09-48. Backup battery. Telematic Control Unit.

U3003:68-08. battery Voltage. Power Steering Control Module.

C1001:97-68. Vision System Camera Image Processing Module.

Any ideas, I've searched for these codes without much luck. Just had battery checked and OK.

Would I be looking at a new steering rack, a local garage has quoted me £2,000?

Kind regards

Tom

What is the battery voltage ?

Even the TCU is saying that it's back-up battery is low which probably means it has been running off that due the vehicle battery SOC being low.

Hi unofix

Thank you for your quick reply. No idea what the voltage is, the garage hooked it up to a machine and showed me the screen that stated 100% and in good condition.

To be honest I am learning towards it being a battery issue.

Tom, invest in a multimeter, they're sub £10, and if all you ever use it for is measuring the voltage of any battery (car or household), worth it's weight in gold...

now you have to leave the joke telling to @Rondy 🤣

No one ever has a Ford with a battery of 100% and in good condition. If you ever get it past 80% charge it's something of a miracle 🤔

Get a multimeter and measure the battery terminal voltage approx. 1 hour after parking and see what it is.

Hi unofix

Thank you for your quick reply.

To battery test a car battery, don't you have to put it under a load for an accurate reading.

I do have a multi meter and will look tomorrow to check the voltage.

Thanks

Only on your Austin A40 🤣

Test the battery while connected to the car as normal. Wait until it has been parked up for around an hour and use a digital multimeter. Make sure you have a good connection directly with the battery terminals and measure to two decimal places. I expect you will get something like 12.22V

Sorry for the slow reply. I've only managed to test the battery, which is showing 12.41V. I assume its not a faulty battery that is causing the fault codes?

That's a fair level of charge, just a fraction under 80% which is normal.

Are the DTC's still there and active ?

Clear and reset all DTC's and wait and see what comes back after 24 hours.
