Alternator repair

Featured Replies

How long should it take to change the alternator on a 1.6 diesil ford focus?

Not long.  Good access space on those.  Easily done within 1 hour at a garage.

What about if its done on a driveway?

What about if its done on a driveway?

I ask this because so far it's taken a mobile mechanic 9 hours just to take off the faulty one.

He's either lacking competence/experience or taking you for a ride...

Well so far he charged me £350 and still expects to charge me for the alternator and the time it takes to put it back on

Not sure what to suggest tbh.  I would expect it to take a bit longer on a driveway but I'm struggling to see how anyone could stretch it out that long on purpose, let alone inadvertently.

Perhaps @iantt could confirm how long it should take in case I'm misremembering something about this job?

Did you get any kind of quote for the job before he started? It's a very 'routine' job with specific hourly times allocated to it. It's not as if he was working blind on finding an obscure fault. (actually, after 9 hours, maybe he is working blind!)

Had a quote of someone else for £380 though I thought that was alot.

This guy wouldn't quote for the job just said his hourly rate was £30 pH.

As I thought it was only around a 2 hour job I agreed, then got home to find he had spent 9 hours on it

Depending on the age of focus and variant of 1.6tdci  time is anywhere between 0.5hr to 2.8 hr

Well there's a lesson learned, an expensive one, but a lesson nonetheless...

It's a 2011 sports 1.6tdi

I changed 1 on my old Focus, same car as yours and it took me about 2 hours to take it off, (never done one on one of these cars before).

Had to take it off from underneath and you need to unbolt the air-con compressor and move it out of the way.

After working out how to get it out, took about an hour to put back in.
