5l oil instead of 4.6l -1l ecoboost

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just got my service done and I provided to my mechanic 5l of oil. I was expecting to get the remaining oil back(I don’t really want it) but I didn’t get anything back and now I’m worried that he might have put the whole bottle in the car. Would that affect the engine? On the dipstick I can see the oil above the max limit but the oil is too clear for me to realise where it “ends”.

I’ll go tomorrow back to him to double check, I just don’t want to leave his garage (tomorrow) with the idea that everything will be fine.

Not going to be good is it? Why else would a manufacturer specify such a specific quantity?

I assumed so, I know my question is a little bit silly but I just wanted to double check.. I'll pop in tomorrow morning to see exactly what was done..

Thanks @deandeandean

Same happened to me. I'm a vet, took 50 ml syringe and intravenous line tube long enough to rich the sump, inserted it through the dipstick opening and removed the excess oil. The engine should be hot!

The diameter of that Tube might be too big to fit in the Dipstick hole and it is probably not long enough as well.

The Syringe that @Tony Roman used is a different thing. The type that you want would probably be a 50 or 100ml one with some clear plastic tubing that fits the Syringe and is long and thin enough to fit down the Dipstick hole.

When I first got my Fiesta brand new from the dealer it was overfilled, I wouldn't worry too much

I got oil back from mine but its still always slightly over the max level

So @Pigeon12, @Tiexen are you guys saying I don't really have to remove it?

Its up to you I am just saying what my expereince is which probobly doesnt mean much, the min and max levels are there for a reason. Idk why its always over max

Little tip for checking the level on brand new oil - do what you'd usually do, so dipstick out, wipe it, put it back in, take it out again...

But now press the dipstick flag against some white paper towel, and drag the dipstick down (width wise, not length wise). You'll be left with a faint brown smear which you can cross reference against the high and low marks on the dipstick.

Hope that description makes sense...

Hopefully there's the correct amount in there, and this trick can help you find out before you go syringing!

I just read the dip stick. This doesn't really look normal

The 1.0 ecoboost is known to be overfilled when changing oil. a mechanic has put what he thinks is the right quantity, runs engine for oil to circulate around Inc filter. Then engine off and rechecks on dipstick , it may show low and he or she may put a little more in until on max. Problem with that is the ecoboost oil takes ages to drain back to sump fully. Then when left it shows over the full mark. Ford say it's ok up to 5mm over the max

I found that if you put 4 l  it will be approx. 2 mm over the min. /there is always some small amount of the old oil/ then you can personally top up on an as needed basis.

I just came back from the garage, the guy said he put 4.6l. He even showed me the bottle, it had some oil left on the bottom.

Regarding the method he just put those 4.6l started the engine and that was all. No "recheck", I've done that in the morning.

Probably they didn't drained the old oil fully. They usually check the level when they decide they filled enough, when you start the engine they ask if the oil light is off and if yes  - that's all. It is the client who usually rechecks. What is the oil, by the way?

@Tony Roman I've bought Petronas Syntium 5000 5w20 this time. I wasn't sure if it is worth buying Castrol 5w20. I couldn't find a 5l 5w20(castrol) only on ebay and I don't really know how reliable that oil is( in terms of quality-ebay/counterfeit).

Regardless of all this, has the Oil Life monitor been reset?

I've done that myself, as soon as I got the car back.

Tells me a lot about the quality of your mechanic if they failed to do that, go elsewhere next time. You should have also been given the small amount of unused oil back instead of you having to go back for it. Useful to have for a top up.

There was more than 4.6l.. I took a 20ml syringe with a small tube and I took about 200ml out. I run the engine for about 10 minutes, let it cool down for about an hour and when I checked the oil level was exactly at max.

I'll keep checking that in the next few days, just in case something is wrong.

Thanks @Tony Roman for the tip!

They can't exactly measure 4,6 l. That's way I always ask them to add 4 l and then I can top up to the right level. If your engine is in good condition the oil level should stay constant for a long time.

@Tony Roman I've done 3 services so far and the oil level was consistent every time.

I'll keep an eye on it though
