Bit of advice in regards to changing cars

Asked and answered... though I would pay attention to previous post of @alexp999 on 'wetbelt' cars!

I had a 125ps 1.0 in a Mk3 Focus and hated it.  Very little torque after a decade of diesel, always changing gear, could stall it easily, just not my thing at all.  Had a 150ps 1.5 in a Mk4 and liked that, that would be my preference if buying a 2019 model.

For a rough economy comparison on Mk4s, the 1.5 150 was averaging about 38mpg on my drives (expected better tbh!), and I had a 155ps 1.0 EcoBoost MHEV (not available in 2019) which averaged around 45mpg on the same roads.

As Alex says, MPG shouldn't be your biggest concern with such low mileage.  You'll be spending more on depreciation and maintenance.  Modern Fords also aren't cheap to maintain.  Main dealer labour is a bit cheaper than Audi's, but parts are more or less the same.  Servicing is about the same too, which surprised me when I moved back to a VAG car.

I'm averaging 45.3mpg with my 2020 1.5 150ps, depends on what journeys you do and how you drive it, I never use eco mode, but do a lot of coasting as the engine gives little to no engine braking.

Is that calculated brim to brim or read from the dash?  That is a particularly good average for the 1.5EB.  Most seem to be around 40mpg average.

As you say, MPG will be different for different people, that was really more of a percentage comparison between 1.0 and 1.5.  My journeys are generally short, mostly town but light traffic.  Same journeys in a 2.0 TDI average 55mpg.  But I will admit that I'm used to driving diesels now so perhaps there would have been some improvement in the 1.5EB over time.  I didn't own that car for long as it wasn't up to my quality standards.

You say new shape, is it a Mk3 or Mk4? A Mk3 1.0 will have the wetbelt, I wouldn't touch a Mk3 1.0 with Engine light on.

Plus, I still don't understand, you didn't like the 1.0?

I don't to be honest but the price of this one would allow me to shift the debt I have on the car which would make things easier for us later down the line. I believe the mk4 is bigger than the mk3 in the back which would allow us more room for our rear facing child seat. I have spoke to the garage about this car and the advert is wrong I would be the 5th owner in 25k miles and the car has no locatable service history so probably avoid it. The car was a 2018 plate but had the newer shape of that year, a mk4 I believe?

The other car we've looked at is a mk3 1.5l ecoboost 150bhp with 35k miles on, which is looking like a better option now. Does that car have the issues you mentioned?

My car is the petrol 1.5, it makes a difference to check tyre pressures, most of my driving is only me, guess that helps not having extra weight.

I know, I put EB for 'EcoBoost'.  I only weigh 50Kg (8st) so I don't think that will be hampering my fuel economy.  In my case it's the length of journeys that make the main difference.  I noticed a considerable drop in MPG when I moved to the suburbs from a rural village.

That's the 4 cylinder version...the one with common coolant issues.

I think it's just a warped head it's known for? And i don't know how common it is. @JW1982 had more info on this engine I think.

Just a warped head?  Only on a Ford forum would that be considered a minor issue.

The head faults are ultimately caused by cooling issues.  It was on my own thread that Wilco posted a very comprehensive reply regarding these.

Yeah that's the one, but as Wilco said, while it is known, it's rare not a common issue.

And their advice from that post:

"From my point of view this engine is very sensitive for uneven warmup/expansion of the different engine components. On this engine it is extremely important to have the engine warmed up before giving it the beans. "

So, needy and delicate...  Not qualities I'd want in an engine myself.  Each to their own though.

You can find known issues on most engines though, I just wanted to make the point it's not common. Certainly not on the same scale as the wetbelt issue in the 1.0.
