Limp Mode with codes P0251 & P0201

Featured Replies

So now I finally have the engine back together and was pleased that it started straight away. No leaks! .........there are issues however.

I realised immediately it was running in limp mode and it will not rev past approx. 1900 RPM or idle. After a run to operating temperature @ a steady 1500 RPM my basic OBD scanner picked up fault codes P0251 and P0201 which I assume have triggered the limp mode protection.

As far as I can tell, P0201 indicates a problem with the No.1 cylinder injector. This is possible because I've fitted a replacement cylinder head and used the injectors it came with (may have already had the fault or been damaged at the the dismantlers). I've kept the injectors from my original cylinder head so if my assumption is correct I'll need to swap out the bad injector.

P0251 is a little more curious. According to various sources on the internet it can be caused by a number of problems, one of which is injectors. Maybe the two codes are linked? Could also be the crankshaft position sensor as I noticed on fitting it that it had rubbed and a small piece of plastic came away. The sensor is relatively new but not genuine Ford. Unfortunately I seem to have mislaid or discarded the old one which was working fine.

Note that I've not yet got Forscan capability, primarily because I don't own a laptop. Running low on optimism at the moment 😕

You don't need a Laptop to use FORScan. For diagnostic work the Phone version is almost exactly the same as the Laptop version and is far superior in some ways in my opinion despite some of the nonsense you will read on this Forum from people who have never used it.

Apart from not being able to do Configuration and Programming, the only things that the Phone version lacks is that you can't use Output Control Mode and there are a very few of the most dangerous Service Functions that FORScan will not allow on the Phone version for safety reasons.

I doubt that your Crankshaft Sensor is faulty, if it was it is doubtful if your Engine would start and if it did the RPM would show as zero.

If swapping the Injector over does nor solve the problem then I doubt you will be able to diagnose the problems with a generic scanner unless you are lucky.

I agree about the crankshaft sensor. It was just that for some reason I noticed that it had rubbed slightly on the crank pulley.

It's also listed as a possible cause of the fault code.

I'll check no.1 injector next. Resistance value of a good one is around 20 ohms. Will also use a mechanics stethoscope to listen to the injector clicking to hear if it's operating ok.

Will also check out the phone version of Forscan.

Hi Ray, well here we are again 🤣 This has more twists and turns than Coronation Street !!!!

As @Tizer has said FORScan Lite, phone version will work well for your needs in carrying out diagnostics.

You will need a 'Good' quality dongle to use with the phone version. I'd recommend using the the following:

Android Phone. vLinker FD  Bluetooth (Not WiFi)

iPhone iOS.  vLinkerFD+  BLE+Bluetooth

A quick look this morning and I found out why the no.1 injector code came up - not even plugged in! My eyesight isn't what it was 🥴

Unfortunately it hasn't cleared the other code and remains in limp mode.

Now idles fine and runs well up to 1950 RPM.

Tried clearing the code but later came up again.

There are two similar plugs on the 1.0EB engine loom.  One for fuel pump reg and the other for evap valve, you may have swapped them by mistake.

Thanks, I'll check that later. I do remember the cable clipping didn't seem right.

TomsFocus, take a bow.

You're suggestion was spot on. The engine is now cleared of limp mode and ready to hit the road 🙂

Many thanks! Saved me a lot of head scratching.

Photos show the correct way (top) and the wrong way (bottom).

Glad it was an easy fix!

Have now finished up re-assembling the Ecoboom and had it MoT tested today - all ok.

No initial issues on the road, however today @ approx 30 miles post-repair the management light came on.

Checked it out and found code P0420 (cat efficiency below threshold). Have had that same code some time ago, despite the cat and pre-cat sensor being fairly new.

Deleted the code and didn't come on again during the 5 mile return to home.

Cat maybe clogged a little with coolant residues as it was previous leaking into the cylinders and exhaust manifold. When I had the downpipe off I could see the inside of the turbo was white and powdery.

Will see how it goes. Perhaps the code is a little reminder I'm sitting on a time bomb 😋

Just tried placing an online bet with William Hills as to how long it will last, but they refused to take my money 🤣
