MK6 1.4 Zetec whining noise at 40mph+/4th gear

Featured Replies

Car unfortunately developed a whining sound at 40mph+/ 4th gear. Goes away when pushing in the clutch, only thing to change recently is I had a wheel alignment last week but I don't think that caused it since the sound is still there when the clutch is pushed in.

Any thoughts ?

So the sound 'goes away when pushing the clutch in' 👍

and

'the sound is still there when the clutch is pushed in' 🤔

I'm confused !!

Oops my bad... to confirm

The sounds goes away when the clutch is pushed in

Not knowing the mileage, but looking just at the age, my thoughts would be a worn syncromesh gear on forth.

@DaveT70 might have an idea of the problem.

That sounds...expensive

Also it's at about 95000 miles

If the noise goes away when you press the clutch pedal down suspect clutch release bearing

Is that generally an expensive job ?

Basically trying to weigh up if it's worth keeping lol bought it for about a grand and in the last 10 months I've had to sink nearly the same amount into it

When the problem happens look at and note the revs on the rev counter.

If the issue goes away when you depress the clutch, knock the car into neutral, release the clutch and coast at the speed, see if the issue is still there, if it is, suspect worn gearbox

Park somewhere quiet.

Rev the engine to the revs that the issue was present at and see if the issue occurs and then goes away when you depress the clutch

If it does suspect clutch release bearing

Awesome thank you, I'll give that a go.

I should note as well if I downshift from 5th to 4th it almost immediately appears
