mk2 focus key fob

Featured Replies

Hi I have a mk2 ford focus with the 3 button key fob, I have changed the battery and it no longer unlocks or locks the car, only if I put the key in the door lock, (the lock is very stiff to turn with the key) I have tried to reset it but no luck,  I tried resetting it by turning the ignition on/off 4 times, i heard the beep, push a button on the fob but nothing happened, any ideas, thanks

Changed the fob battery not car battery?

Have you checked the new one wasn't dud?  Fitted the right way up?  Did it have a removable warning sticker that may have left some residue?

changed the fob battery, it did have a sticker on it but made sure there was no residue and i did fit the battery the right way up, the fob worked ok before the battery change, tried the old battery again and still no joy

its a right pain as i used the key fob to open the boot before it no longer works

Am i allowed to give name and number of a very good Auto Locksmith ?

These people are excellent. Very fast turn round. Phone them and they will talk you through the process.

Used 3 times over the years. (Different family members keys and mine !)

If not allowed to do this, sorry. Please feel free to remove.

Putting in the old battery is an unlikely solution, after all, it was on it's way out anyway hence you wanting to replace. You need to test the voltage of your new battery, it needs to be pushing out 3.3v, anything less than 2.9v will give issues.

Once you have determined that the battery is pumping out what it needs to be, you need to study the compartment it fits in to, and ensure the metal contacts are clean, and touching the battery where it needs to. If it worked before, it's highly unlikely that it has 'gone' faulty, much more likely an errant battery installation.

Also, the 'residue', ensure it is cleaned with a solvent, not just a wipe of a finger. Isopropryl alcohol, or even nail varnish remover, will do the job

i would but its my only key, just strange that it worked before i replaced the battery, saying that it unlocked fine, but took a few attempts to lock, thats why i thought it was the battery

That is almost absolute proof that in 'replacing' the battery, something has gone wrong.

  1. Make sure battery is 3.3v
  2. Make sure the contacts are 'bent' in tight enough to contact the battery on the bottom, and the sides.

I'll bet you 5p, that'll solve all your problems... 👍

Trust me , its a common problem & we can sort it for you, if you want to send it to us we will repair it for you  & if you want we can cut you a new key, & we can clone your transponder chip so you will have a spare key, up & running perfect when you get it back.. send it 1st class recoreded delivery & we will send it back next day recorded tracked delivery.

This is because the fob isn't getting any battery power! It goes off (beeping) when you insert key into ignition because there is a passive transponder built into the key case which will deactivate your PATS system (the red flashing light on your dash cluster which indicates the immobiliser is activated)

If you wish to pay someone to test the battery, and bend the battery contacts - go ahead...

Read my last message, its up to you, if you want it doing.. do as I said, we can sort it for you

Regards Steve

The remote needs to be working to de- activate the alarm, the flashing red light indicates the transponer chip is faulty, despite the remote not working, if the light is still flashing when you try & start the car its an immobiliser fault... the focus between 2005 =2009 has dashboard cluster faults & needs a repair, they have dry  soldered joints on the circuit bard where the main plug connects too. we can do thgis for you.

had my cluster done, i will get a new battery and try again, what is the correct program to get it to work with my car

Treat yourself, buy a 'multimeter', then test your own battery. Buying 'new' batteries isn't a proper test.....

The cluster is nothing to do with your fob!, thats just a starting oroblem

To program the fob>

Make sure all doors are closed>

Quickly turn ignition on & off until you hear a bleep or tone maybe 4x or 6 x times

Remove the key & press any button on your fob, you should hear a bleep or tone

If you dont hear a bleep or tone when you press your fob, it means its not transmitting a RF signal & needs a repair

If you press your fob button & eyou hear the tone or bleep, quickly turn the ighnition to on

Remove the key & it should work

OR, the battery needs properly installed...

A multimeter will only test the voltage of a battery, it won't check the amps .. thats the most important bit. Even with a multimeter if you test a new3 volt battery it will show 3.25 volts... & even it shows 2.9  or even 2.7 !  it should work, but it will struggle to open/close everytime untill it gets a new battery... ie getting closer to the vehicle for it to work intermittently....

Yeh, we're getting somewhere! LOL Yes, ll I want to know is if the 'new' battery is showing 3.3v. After that, the OP can do as he wishes, he came on here for help, I own a Mk2, and have been through the actual process. (Including a cluster repair which this is not symptomatic of) If he'd rather send his fob off to be repaired, that's exactly what he should do...

I'll not be posting any further, don't mind helping folk, but when they ignore basic advice, hard to see where to go...

Yes I agree  🙂
