2010 fiesta van 1.4 tdci anti stall???

Featured Replies

Should this year and model have anti stall because it definitely doesn’t. And if it should what controls it and is there a remedy?
thanks in advance

Can you tell us exactly what you mean by anti-stall?

If you're stalling the engine through poor clutch control then no, there isn't any system that will fully prevent that.  The car will add a few revs if needs be but it'll still stall if you bang the clutch in quickly enough.

If the car is stalling while idling then that's a different matter all together and would be considered a fault.  The engine ECU manages the fuel injection to keep the engine running at idle speed.

If I lift the clutch very slowly the revs do not increase at all. I know in fords it normally does

Clutch switch has probably broken in that case.  The ECU won't know that you're lifting the clutch.

I’ll give it a try

So new clutch switch in this morning. Still no anti stall? Any ideas what’s next on the list of things to try?

That's the only easy option I'm afraid.  I don't think there's a neutral switch on these, they're fitted to later models for stop/start function.

You could get Forscan which will show whether the clutch switch is being detected by the ECU (could be a broken wire to it if not) and will also show any other minor fault codes that could be present but not triggering the EML.

All fuelling is controlled by the PCM, so it should only need a clutch switch input for the anti-stall to raise the revs slightly when stationary.

If you're finding it stalls during slow manoeuvres without throttle, it might be worth checking whether you've got a binding brake holding it back, or is the boot full of heavy tools being a van?  (Appreciate neither of those stop the revs increasing but they will make it easier to stall).

Going to try a PCM update next week hopefully. Read somewhere that someone had it done and it restored the anti-stall. Hopefully take the switch back after!

Garage aren’t sure. Want to do a diagnostic as well (there’s a shock) or they can’t guarantee it will sort it. Take it to £200 job. £90 +VAT for the update. £80 + VAT for the diagnostic. Think it’s worth the risk of just getting the PCM updated. Can’t see what else it could be

And the vans empty and all the wheels spin freely when jacked up

But presumably you don't RELY on it doing that for you?

I think on a 2010 van I'd accept that the anti-stall has broken and I'd go back to driving how I was taught to drive when there was no such thing as 'anti-stall'.

Tbf, I like to do slow manoeuvres with no gas myself - and that is the way I was taught to drive in a diesel.

Though I'm not sure I'd risk £200 on a potential fix for it.

Do I risk just the update then and no diagnostic?? I don’t rely on it but it’s a nice convenience when crawling in traffic

You can do the diagnostic yourself with Forscan.

Then make the decision once we know if there are any fault codes and if the PCM is receiving the clutch switch signal.

Forscan cables are around £20-£40 and you'll need a windows laptop or a Smartphone to download the app.

Completely lost with stuff like this. Any recommendations on which to buy? Is the lite version as good as a laptop based one and do they go into that much detail as in to test just the clutch switch?

FORScan Lite can read the same DTC's as the laptop version and can clear / reset DTC's and some service items like oil reminder. The Lite version can not programme or make changes to software settings.

FORScan (for use on windows laptop): https://forscan.org/download.html

Connection cable for use with all Ford models with OBDII port "vLinker FS":-  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

For use with FORScan Lite and android phone use "vLinker FD":- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-Bluetooth-vLinker-Scanner-Diagnostic/dp/B08H82WC8L

For use with FORScan Lite and iPhone use "vLinker FD+":- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-Bluetooth-vLinker-Scanner-Diagnostic/dp/B08H8JHWP2

Yes.  But it won't be much use until you have an adapter.

Download FORScan

I haven't used the Lite version, so don't know how it compares to the laptop version.

Gone for the laptop one. Will keep you posted 👌🏻

So got forescan on. No dtcs shown. How would I test if the clutch switch is working? Or can I just do a module reset??? image.thumb.jpg.44295e70c2beaa58f4539681b4811158.jpg

It's Forscan.  Forescan would be a very different diagnostic!

To test the clutch switch, we need some live data.  Click the graph picture on the left hand side.  Then scroll through all the PIDs in the PCM until you find one labelled 'clutch switch'.  Once you select it, click to start the live data stream, then press the clutch pedal.  I believe it's a simple on or off switch with these, so should literally show on/off.

Won’t let me start live data?

Got it. No problem with that?
found this on a test. Would that suggest that the Pcm is due an update? IMG_8872.thumb.jpeg.3a8ee7ac744d56b45b67bec8c907e33b.jpeg
