Oil pressure light stays on after start

Featured Replies

Good afternoon,

I'm an owner of Fiesta mk7 2011 1.6tdci 95hp for about 2 months now and decided to give the car for oil and filters change a month ago. Immediately after I discovered that on cold start (when I leave the car overnight only) the red oil pressure light stays on for around 4 - 6 seconds and sometimes gives a warning on display about low oil pressure for less than a second. After that the car drives smoothly with no change whatsoever. I came back to my mechanic and it turned out the oil filter was put on incorrectly so he replaced it, he then checked the oil pressure on cold and hot engine with manometer which was great (the car needed  around 1s to get to right pressure) and changed the oil sensor. It seemed everything was fixed, but the oil pressure light still stays on for few seconds after start and occasionaly the warning appears on display (only after start). The oil used: 5W30, as it was before I bought the car.

Is it something I should be concerned about or is it normal for fiestas? Can this mean some bigger problem is on its way?

did the mechanic not scan it and see what errors it came up with?

i've had the same problem on my fiesta...it's just it was a mk4 : )

But never mind the car..the problem was the cheap Comline or what was the brand oil filter... it took about 2 s to get to the right pressure so the light would turn off.

Next time, the filter was Mahle or Mann, can't recall, but the warning light turned off much quicker...like less than a half a second...

it's probably the valve & spring in the filter, allowing the oil to flow back... so everytime you start it, it's almost like the first start on a brand new filter - it needs to get filled with oil to build sufficient pressure.

How can a mechanic, who charges money, not manage to fit an oil filter correctly?

Please never go to that mechanic again.

As above, always buy your own quality filter, and give it to your next mechanic - however the recent Mahle I bought for the Fiesta was 'made in China' and did not appear to be made of the same high quality materials as the 'made in Austria' I bought before that.  Mann are usually well made as noted above.

And although I don't know your diesel engine, if I were you I'd learn how to change your own oil/filter.  It's clear you'll do a better job than someone else.  And yes I noticed you were called Ann.....  If you don't want to do this, get a family member to do it.

If it is a poor/cheap filter you have on now, the hassle of changing just the filter would be well worth it IMO.  Low pressure at start-up will do damage over time.  Cold oil start-up is the point of highest wear for an engine.

It's not unheard of on this engine.  You're meant to fit the paper cartridge filter first, locating the bottom tab into the housing, and then screw the plastic cap back on.  However it seems that people either just chuck the filter back in without locating the tab, or shove it into the cap first and then try to screw it back on.

But this is his/her job - their knowledge or experience is what you pay them for.

An independent mechanic won't know the intricacies of every type of engine.  They don't go to Ford training so experience only comes from failure - hopefully they'll know what to do next time.

It's not just new techs either.  Sadly, a lot of these issues are caused by complacency.  Older mechanics that think they've seen it all before.

I'd strongly recommend anyone to carry out their maintenance if possible.  I wouldn't trust any garage 100%.

Yup...that's why i started DIY maintenancing as much as possible. Heard too many horror stories ..either incompetence or greed/fraud  ... Not to say there aren't many good mechanics ...

I too have noticed the quality drop by Mahle ... so Mann became the first choice with all the filters..

It sure is...that's why i couldn't tolerate it for too long..I think i lasted about three weeks before swapping it out and throwing it in the bin. Never bought anything with "Comline" on it again.

Thanks for all the replies, I took your advice and bought Mann brand oil filter last week. We exchanged it few days ago and made sure it was fitted correctly. Unfortunately it didn’t solve the problem. The oil pressure light still stays on for too long after cold start which leads to warning being displayed occasionally.
It was suggested to me that maybe the problem isn’t new to this engine, but was hidden before I bought it with some kind of oil supplement. I will still try to get to the depth of it with different mechanic, but I’m not too worried for now as the car drives and sounds very well.

Good thought that it might be a pre-existing condition.  Good luck with it whatever.

Could also be the wrong oil has been used, I would get the correct oil and change it to see if it goes away

Hello,

I am the owner of a 2013 Ford Fiesta 1.5 TDCi, and I am experiencing the exact same issue.

I recently performed an oil change using a high-quality filter (I believe) bosch, as well as Castrol Magnatec 5w30 oil. I also replaced the oil pressure sensor.

However, the oil pressure indicator still remains on for about 2 to 3 seconds after only a cold start, which triggers an error message that appears for approximately 1 second before disappearing.

Have you managed to identify the source of the problem?

thanks
